I Just Wanna Make Pies

“But, I just wanna make pies!” I feel ya, sister.
Whether it’s baking or dog grooming or organizing or executive coaching--we all get into business for ourselves because we love and excel at what we do. (Or we should anyway.)
Ah, but then we have to add to that expertise skills we hadn’t counted on building:
Some accounting basics
- How to do payroll
- Tax issues
And...then there is marketing
- Lead generation
- Social media
- Website hosting
There is a WHOLE LOT about running a business that you just have to do...or know enough to confidently pay someone else to manage.
I fired my first two bookkeepers for failing to pay some taxes. As in, they simply failed to file. To their credit I got emails a week after the deadline with a “mea culpa” message and they covered my fees, but you can bet I didn’t trust them again after that. And the STRESS!
And did I say that happened to me TWICE? Yes. TWICE!
Now I happily pay my current bookkeeper--who is amazing and proactive--3Xs what I had shelled out to those previous bookkeepers. I learned from my mistakes. I TOOK THE TIME TO LEARN WHAT I NEEDED TO KNOW, and THEN I hired. And it’s worth every dime!
The same thing happens with DIGITAL MARKETING, which can be confusing and complicated. And I get it--you’d rather spend your time doing what you love, what you excel at. You’d rather bake your pies and rock your unique brilliance!
But…
Don’t be like me and hand off something you don’t understand. It rarely ever works out well.
Learn enough to get comfortable with the lingo and what you need. LEARN ENOUGH TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS--whatever it is: accounting, taxes, or DIGITAL MARKETING!
You don’t need the stress.

4 年Agreed. It's like running two businesses at once :( (or three, if you run two businesses like I do - exhausted just thinking about it!)

4 年Great point, Michelle Tresemer. From my view, there is absolutely no educational background or training that can fully prepare us to be prosperous business owners. While we are subject matter experts, running a real live business requires completely separate of skills sets. Knowing what we know is one thing but knowing what we don't know is something completely different and so crucial for being prosperous...sounds like a podcast...would you like to join me to discuss? Best,
