I just realized, I've made it
During my senior year of college, 3 college friends invited me to participate in their green building consulting startup, Halcyon Environmental. These three friends introduced me to the fascinating world of green building technologies as well as the LEED building rating system. While working with them they told me about an International Conference and Expo called Greenbuild. It is the Mecca of the sustainable building profession. It was being held in Boston that year (2008) and we aspired to scrounge up enough business and money to support our trip to the show. Unfortunately, that trip never happened. But without that experience, I wouldn't be here writing this today with so much appreciation for the journey I've been on since that time.
Nine years later, I find myself in Boston for the Greenbuild show and reflect on those Halcyon Environmental days. I can't help but feel a little like self-proclaiming "I've made it." I've achieved my own definition of "career success." I knew I wanted to work in clean-technology since I was in high school. Surprisingly, I never planned this or wrote out goals to get me here. I was simply guided by passion. Along the way, I took pay cuts to get in the industry, jobs to learn the business, and networked tirelessly. It's a reminder and confirmation to myself that following your passion will lead you to where you wish to be.
And today, I'm with a great team and company that I believe is positively changing the future, not just for transportation but for the environment.
To borrow from Mahatma Gandhi, I feel really fortunate to be able to "be [and sell] the change [I] wish to see in the world"
