I just broke up with Amazon. What did you do this weekend?
It sounds so easy, but it took longer than I would like to admit. I finally cancelled my Amazon Prime membership.
This was a personal 2020 goal, as someone who supports retail, start ups, and voting with your dollar.
Why you may ask? Maybe it was the horrible warehouse conditions, the poor quality controls, and my desire to live in a world where I can know that my money is sometimes directly going toward the local economy.
I'm here to tell you, it's not hard. I get pet supplies from chewy.com, office supplies same day pick up from Office Depot. All the stuff friends swear you can only get on Amazon is easily found on ebay, usually at a much better price.
This might not be a popular choice, but it is possible to live in a world without amazon and survive. Maybe I'll do business with them again one day, but my only foreseeable temptation at the moment is in the form of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I think under the circumstances she would approve.
Let me know your thoughts - I'm curious to hear where the linkedin community lands on shopping local during this incredibly decisive year.
Do you want to start 2021 in a world with fewer local businesses? Why or why not?
