I - for Incomprehensible

The #BANI acronym offers an abbreviation of the complexity that is happening in the world. It was introduced by Jamais Cascio,? a San Francisco Bay Area-based author and futurist and author of the article ``Facing the age of Chaos'' in which he presented BANI.

This is the fourth article in a series of five; previous ones discussed B for Brittle , A for Anxiety , and N for Non-Linear . It's time for I for Incomprehensible - let’s go!?

Getting comfortable with incomplete data?

From the meaning of the word comprehensible in a dictionary, we could conclude that something that is in-comprehensible cannot be understood.?

However, if we think about the definition more in depth, we might find the root of the problem, because pretending to understand things fully in order to comprehend them might be impossible nowadays.?

Today’s understanding should come from the ambiguous, incomplete, the mutable, the flexible.?

In the face of incomprehensible situations, our instinct might be to ask for more information to get clarity, but is more information always clarifying? The answer is not at all. On the contrary, more information can result in overwhelming.?

Recent studies published on Statista, Intel and other sources showed that data doubles each year. The Moore Law lives as we interact and generate more data every second.? Can you imagine processing even more data, and sometimes in real time??

In today’s world, do not try to control data or fully get it, but learn how to deal with missing data and lack of conclusive explanations.

Intuition is the key

The brittle (B), anxious (A), and nonlinear (N) life we live today, make most things incomprehensible - a lot of information but still incomplete data.?

As leaders, we can rely on tools processing data, even on dashboards, but computers for now do not replace a human needing to prioritize or decide on several specific problems in a matter of minutes. What will be then the best skill to make fast and effective decisions? Intuition we will say.?

Intuition should be developed at every level, in every organization, to get the chance to move quickly and effectively, while adapting to any unpredicted change.?

Intuition improves when we gain experiences, the more we listen and sense our environment, the more we discern between quality and noise. You should learn to listen to subtle messages and for that, you should be fully aware of space, time and your surrounders. Sounds impossible nowadays, but it can be trained.

The purpose of teaching intuition is not to bombard people with information, but rather to give them the opportunity to develop independent thinking, to meditate, to recognize when something is coming from the subconscious.

Conclusion

When needing to resolve a problem or analyzing a situation, we recommend you think of the Greeks and people like Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, who were able to establish concepts and norms that are still valid today, with far less information available that we have today. They had, however, the enormous capacity and capability of observing and understanding the sourranders. Their intuition was fully exploited for comprehension and played a larger role than any source of information available.?

We all talk about #artificialintelligence in the last months, and how impressive bots like GPT have been developed. Some would even say that humans are about to be replaced by machines or that we do not need any more team members because all can be donde by GPT, but please do not rush to those conclusions. Humans are still needed and at least in our generation, leaders will not be replaced.?

Humans, we have a problem.?

Perhaps many problems.?

Differently from machines, we deal with emotions, overthinking, and existence life questions that oftentimes blurry our performance. We invite you however, to think about all those life experiences and tussle as the motor to improve intuition. People that live, that challenge themselves, that deal with adversity, are the ones developing critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills, and therefore, have a much better chance to understand nuances.?

Those are the people who know to deal with uncertainty, who understand the unsaid, who discern the importance from the banal.? Computers cannot yet, not even the most advanced AI chatbot.??

We will need our whole set of intelligence to respond and react wisely to the day to day incomprehensible circumstances around us. Humans are one step ahead of any computer as long as we thrive to connect and learn from our experiences.?

The intuitive computer will still be years in the making - so better learn to take advantage of technology while first and foremost, you learn to cope and succeed despite BANI.

Good insights Daniela C. Merlano ????. I think a lot of incomprehension doesn't come for a lack of information but rather having too much information and not being able to sift through it to find the piece we're looking for. This is something that we've been dealing with for about a decade now, and that has cause and lot of anguish as we deal with being overwhelmed. My opinion in any case!
