I was honored.... would you be too?
Today I had the honor to train a group of talents on "Digital Media". Obviously Digital Media is one of those terms that is confusing to many of us.
I have a LinkedIn profile, does that make me part of Digital Media, or am I missing anything? I have a Facebook account and I try to keep this as private as possible. I follow a number of people on twitter, what happens to my stats? Instagram, I use to share my spare time activities but sometimes I share some things I do at work.
All statement I hear from those that are sort of engaged but still seek for what this line is between my professional life and my private life, and trust me I am active in the Social Media space and I every time struggle to see the line. Effectively I find it hard.
That said I few years ago I decided I do not care about the line. Me is me, and if you look at what I do for a living or what I do when I am living you will find that there is no real line. WYSIWYG was the old saying but frankly that is what it is. Now I have chosen that and I fully respect and appreciate others might struggle a bit more with this cut between what I share in my professional Social Media presence versus what I feel comfortable sharing about my more private matters.
So my advice is:
Make for yourself very clear choices. I made mine but I again fully understand others have very different opinions and that is fine. But no matter how equal or different you are YOU need to decide what you want Social Media to be. If you do not like something on one of the TV channel you switch to another channel. So when you see something on Social Media you do not like either say something about it in Social Media or just ignore it and move on to the next.
Chose, but chose clearly.
I have added to this, “Read What You Need”. Read only those things that inspire you, read just that that you feel helps you to get a better perspective to the world, interact not with those that are all like minded but seek to understand other sides. I love doing that because in this world of propaganda we must learn ourselves what it is we believe in and who we trust. Trusting yourself and your judgement is a good start because what Social Media is starts with what you want it to be.
Have you chosen your Personal Social Media Strategy?
