I have a question for you about the blue-collar industry...

Why aren't as many blue-collar players killing it on social media compared to their white-collar counterparts?

I've been wondering about this for a few months now.

It all comes down to attitude.

Let me explain...

Blue-collar is an old-school industry

Filled with many very masculine personalities.

I was raised by one of them.

I think there’s something borderline "feminine" about social media at least in the traditional sense which if you know me, I'm not a fan of but I digress...

Just for the sake of this example... think about it.

Being someone who goes out there and shares content means you’re “showboating” and being braggadocious about your achievements.

Therefore, I think many people share the perspective that it’s not OK to create content

That you are in some way taking away from your humbleness, and therefore you’re seen as arrogant/cocky.

But allow me to set the record straight.

That's some bull sh*t.

Once you overcome those mental hurdles and get past feelings of inadequacy…

You will come to realize that what you're trying to do is share a story/experience with your audience NOT boast unnecessarily.

No, you don't need to dance and or use Tikity Tokity.

It doesn’t have to be the typical “Hold your phone and take a boomerang selfie” kind of video.

Like... oh my god...

f*** that.

It can be very different, similar to a simple conversation between you and your buddies.

Except it’s on social media and your potential customers can see it and grow interested in you by posting it.

Here's another interesting angle to consider.

Dirty hands.

Blue-collar workers suffer from that quite often.

This could easily make someone apprehensive about using social media in between tasks.

On the flip side.

White-collar workers are sitting in front of a computer more often, therefore, they have a lot more time, but that also means...

Their lives are a lot less interesting.

I'll use myself as an example on this one.

I'm in my office all day long, unless I see a UPS driver getting in a high-speed chase through my neighborhood with local law enforcement?!

My day is very boring!

People who work in blue-collar industries have nothing but stories, interesting experiences, and insights that they can share that happen consistently because…

Their jobs are constantly changing no matter where they work.

They’re going from one location to the next, and each job changes based on the setup.

They’re not staying in one cubicle and performing a specific set of duties all day.

They have to think differently because of this.

Here's why this matters:

?

Ultimately this will grant blue-collar operators the opportunity to thrive on social media in the coming years...

The fact that they have real-world on-the-ground experience ? in a digital space.

Not only that, but they'll be able to share that information in a way that doesn’t feel pretentious or grandiose.

It’s like the difference between hearing the mom-and-pop business talk about something versus the eccentric startup founder.

That shoeless frizzy-haired guru isn’t relatable.

But a person who gets their hands dirty every single day

And works with: ?

  1. People
  2. Customers
  3. Contractors
  4. Distributors
  5. Engineers
  6. Sales teams
  7. Other tradespeople
  8. Jurisdictions
  9. Governmental Agencies/Regulators…

Their world is very different from that of a white-collar worker because of this.

There’s something unique about that and it should be highlighted more often on social media, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram.

I’ve been working with someone in the blue-collar space and he has nothing but amazing stories to tell and those stories blow the F up on LinkedIn.

Because they're relatable and down-to-earth.

I’ve decided to completely change my niche because of results like this…

Over 300,000 views in 6 + months with only 2-3 text-heavy posts per week

I’ve realized there’s an opportunity here and I want to help people in this industry find real bonafide business.

In supporting blue collar workers with digital skills, we actually learned that there was a mindset block between actually being digitally enabled with work tools, and being able to place a bet or retweet funny GIFs on twitter. I even see it with white collar, those who loved FB and use it one particular way, usually to moan about local issues, can't actually apply the same technology to business. It's a fascinating discovery of how people operate and use tools at their disposal.
