I Have No Idea! Where Do I Begin?
I’m often asked, “How are wages determined?”
As the employer, do you follow your peers, just toss a number out there, or expect the job candidate to tell you?
The sad fact is that there are things most employers do not even consider when they look at formulating wage offerings.
Here are some:
Cost of living in your market
Your practice fees (directly related to locale/market)
Is yours a specialty practice?
Are your hours of operation within the typical 7-4, 8-5, 9-6 range or are they out of the norm (evenings and weekends?)
Does the position require clinical certifications? (other than RDH)
Does the position require working solo or in tandem with other team members? (busy practice-one Administrator, busy practice-one Clinical Assistant, busy practice-one RDH?)
Does the position require travel?
Does the position require any after-hours responsibilities? (managing after-hours calls? On call for after hour patient emergencies?)
I not only discuss these variables with my clients, but we consider these things when we construct a salary "range". Utilizing my Progressive Salary Program further enables the new hire and the employer to monitor and appropriately reward the employee for meeting goals and successfully developing skill sets required to advance their compensation accordingly.
