I have been promoted into Leadership too soon - What do I do?

You have been thrown into the deep end—the leadership deep end. Now, you are managing and leading people. Have you been given floaties or training? Probably not. Have you been promoted too soon? It happens all the time. I've been there. I've worked with hundreds who have as well. It's scary and exciting. However, how do you set yourself up for success?

Feeling like you were promoted into a leadership position before you were fully prepared can be daunting, but there are steps you can take to navigate this situation effectively:

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Feeling overwhelmed or uncertain when stepping into a new leadership role is natural. Acknowledge your feelings and recognise that sometimes it's okay to feel unsure. Give yourself permission to learn and grow in your new role. Be kind to yourself.
  2. Seek Support and Guidance: Reach out to mentors, colleagues, or other leaders within your organisation for support and guidance. They can offer advice, share their experiences, and provide valuable insights to help you navigate leadership challenges.
  3. Invest in Your Development: Take proactive steps to develop your leadership skills and knowledge. This could involve attending leadership training programs , reading books or articles on leadership, or seeking out opportunities for mentorship or coaching.
  4. Ask for Feedback: Request feedback from your team members, peers, and supervisors on your performance in your new role. Be open to constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity for growth and improvement.
  5. Build Relationships: Build strong relationships with your team members and colleagues. Listen to their concerns, understand their perspectives, and demonstrate empathy and respect. Building trust and rapport is essential for effective leadership. We also recommend getting to know your team individually and conducting one-on-ones each month.
  6. Set Realistic Expectations: Recognise that it's okay to make mistakes and that leadership is a continuous learning and growth journey. Set realistic expectations for yourself and be patient as you develop your skills and confidence in your new role.
  7. Delegate and Empower: Try to do only some things yourself. Delegate tasks and responsibilities to your team members and empower them to take ownership of their work. Trusting your team and giving them autonomy can lead to better outcomes and foster a sense of ownership and accountability.
  8. Communicate Transparently: Be honest and transparent with your team about your experience and any challenges you may face. Transparency builds trust and allows for open communication, which is crucial for effective leadership.
  9. Learn from Mistakes: Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities and be willing to admit when you've made a wrong decision or misstep. Use setbacks to reflect, learn, and improve your leadership approach.
  10. Seek Feedback Regularly: Continuously seek feedback from your team members, peers, and supervisors to gauge your progress in your leadership role. Use this feedback to make adjustments and refine your leadership style over time.
  11. Take Care of Yourself: Prioritise self-care and well-being as you navigate leadership challenges. Make time for activities that recharge and energise you, such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time with loved ones.

Remember that leadership is a journey, and it's expected to experience challenges and setbacks. By seeking support, investing in your development, and embracing growth opportunities, you can overcome the initial challenges of being promoted into leadership too soon and become a more effective and confident leader.

How to Learn Leadership

Learning leadership is a continuous process involving developing skills, knowledge, and qualities that enable you to guide and inspire others effectively. Here are some steps you can take to learn leadership:

  1. Self-Assessment: Reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, values, and goals. Understanding your abilities and areas for improvement will help you identify the leadership skills you need to develop.
  2. Set Clear Goals: Define your objectives for leadership development. What specific skills or qualities do you want to cultivate? Set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals to guide your learning journey.
  3. Study Leadership Theory: Familiarise yourself with foundational theories and models of leadership. Explore different leadership styles, traits, and approaches, and consider how they apply to other contexts and situations.
  4. Seek Role Models: Identify leaders you admire and respect, whether they're within your organisation, your community, or from history. Study their leadership styles, behaviours, and decision-making processes, and learn from their successes and failures.
  5. Take Courses and Training Programs: Enroll in leadership development courses, workshops, or seminars to gain practical knowledge and skills. Look for programs that cover topics such as communication, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, team building, and strategic thinking.
  6. Read Widely: Expand your understanding of leadership by reading books, articles, and blogs written by thought leaders in the field. Explore various perspectives and topics related to leadership, including management, psychology, sociology, and organisational behaviour.
  7. Practice Active Listening: Cultivate your listening skills, which are essential for effective leadership. Practice active listening by giving your full attention to others, asking clarifying questions, and summarising their key points to demonstrate understanding.
  8. Seek Feedback: Request feedback from colleagues, mentors, and supervisors on your leadership abilities. Use their insights to identify areas for improvement and adjust your approach.
  9. Embrace Challenges: Don't shy away from challenging situations or opportunities to lead. Take on new responsibilities, volunteer for leadership roles, and seek out projects that stretch your abilities and provide valuable learning experiences.
  10. Develop Emotional Intelligence: Emotional intelligence (EQ) is crucial to effective leadership. Work on developing self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills to better understand and connect with others.
  11. Lead by Example: Demonstrate leadership qualities in your everyday actions and interactions. Embody the values and behaviours you want to see in others and strive to inspire and motivate those around you.
  12. Reflect and Iterate: Reflect on your leadership experiences and identify lessons learned. Consider what went well, what could have been improved, and how to apply these insights to future situations. Continuously iterate and refine your leadership approach based on feedback and reflection.

Remember that learning leadership is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself, stay curious and open-minded, and commit to ongoing growth and development as a leader.
