I Hate My Website Series: "I Can't Stand the Platform It's Built In!"

One of the most common frustrations I hear from business owners is: "I hate the platform my website is built on!" Whether it's confusing, limiting, or just plain frustrating, the platform your site is built on can make or break your online experience. Here are some of the top complaints I hear:

  • "It's hard to use!" – The backend is confusing, and I spend more time Googling how to make a simple change than running my business.
  • "I can't edit it!" – Every little update requires a web developer, which costs time and money.
  • "It’s too limiting!" – I want to add features, but my platform doesn’t allow it without expensive upgrades.
  • "It looks outdated!" – The templates and customization options are too rigid, and I can’t get the look I want.
  • "I can't customize the site!"– The template I have does not allow for custom placement or font use.

Breaking Down the Most Popular Website Platforms

Not all platforms are created equal. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of three of the most commonly used website builders: WordPress, Squarespace, and Wix.

WordPress

? Pros: Highly customizable, scalable, SEO-friendly, vast plugin options, ideal for long-term growth. ? Cons: Requires more technical know-how, security updates, and maintenance are necessary, and some plugins can slow down performance.

Squarespace

? Pros: Sleek and modern templates, easy drag-and-drop editor, all-in-one hosting and support. ? Cons: Less flexible for customization, fewer third-party integrations, can get expensive with premium features. You do not own the files or the site itself. SEO is clunky and not up to date with limited capabilities.

Wix

? Pros: Very beginner-friendly, intuitive drag-and-drop editor, quick setup. ? Cons: Limited SEO capabilities, less control over advanced customizations, switching templates requires rebuilding the site.

Having helped a friend with some WordPress challenges they were facing several years ago, I can wholeheartedly agree with your description of that tool. It's a great tool for the power of what it can do, but it helps to be able to write various scripts because you're going to need it.
