I Hate This...

A few weeks ago, I got a text asking if I knew anyone hiring a recruiter. I didn’t off the top of my head, but I did do a quick search of remote recruiting roles on LinkedIn to see what the market looks like right now. In summary, it’s scary out there. That’s not just a late Halloween pun.?

Here's what I saw:

  • The bullets. How many bullets can you put on a job posting? The answer is infinity, apparently. I read one with 68 last week. Yes. I counted. Who read that bulleted list and thought: “Perfect! This is it."
  • The buzzwords. How is it that everyone is looking for an authentic, transparent, collaborative, future-thinking candidate at the exact same time? I'll tell you how with just one word - or, an acronym, I guess: AI wrote this. News flash: we can all tell. ?
  • The salary (or lack of). The rates are not commensurate with expectations in the postings at all. You want someone to have 10 years of experience and manage a team for $55,000 a year? No. These salaries look like something out of 1999, not 2023.?

What have you seen? Post your screenshots in the comments. I know if you’re job searching right now, you’ve read bad job postings. I can find you 10,000 in less than 2 minutes.?

My issue is that on the other side of those posts are people who are trying to figure some hard shit out.?

This isn’t right.?

We’re reaching a tipping point where things have to change. We can’t keep operating in this imbalanced world of hiring.

I try to do my part in this big, broken space but it’s going to take more than me to make this leap. It’s going to take a change to our philosophies, not just processes. This month’s blogs touched on changing both - in government and in our lives. There are a few more lessons, too. Enjoy.?

Can't be THAT much of a micromanager if that got posted ??

Ah. So it's okay to uphold a toxic work environment if you warn the candidates about it ahead of time. Noted.

I absolutely hate that this exists, but God bless whoever had the nerve to say it in the post. You just know the micromanager is the owner’s son who legit is unemployable anywhere else and he’s clearly not going to be fired or transferred. We need to find someone who either won’t take it personally and will let it roll right off or an extremely competent person who’s as much of an ass as this guy and will push back just enough to do him some good. “So help me, Carl! We can’t have him run off every decent person. I’m not going through this again. He made Janine cry! Just put in the post that he’s an asshole so people know that going in. But don’t say that word obviously, you know…’asshole, but make it HR.’”

Katrina Kibben, I’ve definitely seen scary job postings with an overwhelming list of required qualifications and job duties. These would intimidate the most courageous of applicants, let alone equity-deserving people who may have unconventional backgrounds. My favourite job postings are short and sweet, showing flexibility and emotional intelligence, and future-oriented/ looking at an applicant’s commitment and values rather than an exhaustive list of required years of experience, degrees, and certifications.
