I had ChatGPT do my homework, and then I critiqued it

In this blog I'm going to do something more different than all my other blogs. I'm going to let Chat GPT 3.5, write my entire blog and then I'm going to analyze and see how it holds up. Chat GPT is great at generating ideas, but I've never utilized it to write a whole blog post before, so I'm curious on how it's all going to unfold.

To Start

Before Chat GPT, can write my blog, I have to give it a good prompt, so it can give me something to work with. The prompt I decided to enter was,

  • "Write a short LinkedIn blog post about the "Use of Generative AI in Digital Marketing." Make it easy to read but as informative as possible."

This prompt gave me a good blog, but it was a little short for my liking, so I asked Chat GPT a follow up prompt,

  • "Good blog, but can you make it a little longer."

After that I got a blog I was satisfied, and below you will see what the power of AI can do, a full blog post about the Power of Generative Artificial Intelligence in digital marketing.

My Thoughts on the Results

My Initial Reaction to the power of Generative AI


This was my first time using Chat GPT, so my initial thoughts on using it was that it was similar to Perplexity AI, a different AI tool I've used before. I've used AI for random odd tasks or questions, but this was my first time ever using it to write a whole written piece that I could copy and paste. Coming up with a prompt was easy, as I followed this prompting guide, and within a few seconds, an entire blog post was generated for me, completely free and no sign up necessary.


Looking at the actual product of what Chat GPT outputted, I initially was surprised at how well the format looks to a LinkedIn blog and other blogs I've previously written before. In my prompt I told the AI to specifically generate a LinkedIn blog, but I was expecting just text, and not a formatted blog. I also didn't include, but the AI also generated hashtags for me to use which I thought was amazing on how smart the AI replicated a LinkedIn blog format. However, even though the formatting looked presentable, diving deeper and reading what was actually written I have some complaints:

  • It sounds too Robotic: In my prompt I asked to make it easy to read, which I think helped a little, but outside of the last conclusion paragraph, anyone can obviously tell AI wrote it. It also is definition heavy, but little about actual applications of Generative AI. For example the blog talks about the advantages of Generative AI when it comes to tailoring content, but it doesn't specify how that type of content actually looks like in the real world.
  • The Tone is Flat: One downside to AI, is that it lacks the human element of emotion. Good writing has a tone, and that's especially needed for blogs, but this piece Chat GPT is informative as an educational piece, but as a blog it's a little boring, as every section is written and sounds the same, with little diversity.
  • Lacks in Creativity: Since every section is formatted and written the same structurally, just different words and definitions, the blog lacks creativity. A normal blog written by a human has much more creativity, and doesn't structure a blog the exact same way from start to finish. This way blogs don't become repetitive and redundant like a High School 5-paragraph essay, which is what the AI blog is written like.


The Future of AI in Digital Marketing

Although not perfect at writing a blog for me, Chat GPT and other AI tools have so much potential in the future of digital marketing, and already play a role in it today. AI tools like Chat GPT aren't leaders and can't complete a project like writing a blog and making it sound good, but they are really good in playing support. For example Chat GPT excels at helping bring ideas to the forefront, and I wouldn't use AI to write a blog for me in the future, but I will use it to research ideas and arguments I could make to enhance my writing.

Some ways AI can play support in the Future of Digital Marketing are:

  1. Idea Generation: AI like ChatGPT can generate valuable content ideation for blogs, videos, and stories used in digital marketing campaigns. AI helps with brainstorming as ChatGPT can accumulate a plethora of ideas for a prompt you give it.
  2. Proofreading: With tools like Grammarly, AI can proofread written work like emails in digital marketing campaigns, reducing the manual labor needed to fact check and edit work. This then allows digital marketers to allocate their time to other important campaign problems.
  3. Improving Daily Workflow: Waiting for hours for customer service to pick up the phone, is annoying but with AI, customer service is much more efficient. AI customer service tools like Cortana on Microsoft, help productivity as marketers can ask questions and save time to focus attention on what matters most.
