Let’s get the obvious out of the way; I am extremely impressed. ChatGPT demonstrates an innate understanding of effective essay structure and rhetorical language. It’s easy to look at the sheer amount of work that ChatGPT can put out in seconds and become overwhelmed. I don’t care how fast or how gifted you are; no human being can write an essay of this quality in 30 seconds.?
Once I overcame my initial shock, I decided to take a look under the hood, and the reality of the situation became more clear. Let’s examine what makes this tool great, and what makes it less than ideal for repeated use.?
A One Trick Pony
After thoroughly reading the AI generated essay, I asked ChatGPT to write it again via the “Regenerate Response” button at the bottom of the interface. After the AI wrote a second essay, I regenerated another. After a total of three essays, I saw the clearer picture.?
ChatGPT has likely aggregated thousands upon thousands of essays to formulate original content at the lightning speed it is known for. However, another consequence of this aggregation is that every essay ChatGPT writes is very similar to the last unless you make significant changes to the prompt. The AI will use the same talking points and references and rearrange the order. I felt like a high-school English teacher grading an essay written by a student who clearly copied from the smartest kid in class.?
