I got KO’d by a 7-year-old

This weekend, my husband and I decided to relive our glory days by downloading Tekken 8. Back in the day, we spent countless hours battling it out in Tekken and sneaking around in 007: Golden Eye. Ah, the golden age of romance—nothing says "budding love" like a well-timed virtual uppercut and some pixelated espionage.

With Tekken 8 downloaded, we settled in for an afternoon of epic knockouts.

Now, you’d think two adults could easily navigate pairing a second controller and setting up versus mode, right? Wrong. Picture this: two supposedly tech-savvy grown-ass-adults, each glued to their own YouTube tutorial. We were a sight to behold.

But finally, we got it sorted and soon our living room was filled with the sounds of victory cries and laughter.

It was brilliant!

Then our 7-year-old daughter wanted to join in. As she cozied up beside me, I gently suggested we take it slow so she could learn the controls.

Nope.

Like a true Tekken Boss, she went straight into button-smashing mode and KO'd me before I could even think about my Heat Smash power move.

I had to laugh because, back in the day, that was my style too. Forget learning the move sequences—just press all the buttons as fast as possible and hope for the best! It got me some wins, sure, enough wins to keep me playing, but consistency? Not so much.

I was a button smasher when I started writing copy too. Full of gusto and enthusiasm, I tried everything, hoping something would stick.

Fast forward (cough) many years, and here I am, diligently going through the Tekken tutorial, actually learning different move combos and how to block. Why? So I can play strategically and effectively.

It’s fun to jump in and wing it, and it’ll get you so far. But there comes a point when you want to switch gears and really know what you’re doing.

Cheers to fewer button smashes and more master moves!

Belinda

My Copywriting Inkubator program helps new copywriters go from enthusiastic button-smashing to setting the foundation for copywriting mastery. Because winging it might get you a few wins, but true success comes from knowing the moves. It opens up in July!
