I got fired for poor performance - Handling Critical Interview Questions

Critical interview questions are an opportunity to showcase your skills, problem-solving abilities, and resilience. It is possible to have ended your previous job in the way you do not like or as a result of poor performance, and there is 80% chances you are asked about your previous work experience or why you left your previous work in an interview. How do you approach this kind of situation?

In my career coaching services, one of the things I do for my clients is help them prepare for job interviews. I will ask them series of questions, check out their previous work experiences, and look into the best possible way to be the best candidate for the roles they are targeting, and its always being a huge success.

A particular scenario happened recently and I thought to enlighten people out there most especially jobseekers whose previous job ended as a results of low or poor performance. How do you respond to an interview question asking why you ended your last job without telling lies, remember no lies when it comes to job applications and interviews. If you area caught, that's the end of it.

And you should even ask yourself, "What if they had make enquires about your previous work before you are being invited for interview, and you lied to them about what really happened, then you already lost the job!"

Getting fired for poor performance can be challenging, but it's important to approach future job interviews with honesty and a focus on personal growth. Here are some suggestions on what to say during your next job interviews:

1. Take responsibility: Acknowledge your previous performance issues and take full responsibility for them. Admitting your mistakes shows maturity and a willingness to learn from your experiences.

Example: "In my previous role, I faced challenges with my performance, and I take full responsibility for that. However, I have reflected on those experiences and have taken proactive steps to improve myself both personally and professionally."

2. Highlight lessons learned: Emphasize the lessons you've learned from your past performance issues and how you have grown as a result. Discuss the specific actions you've taken to address those weaknesses.

Example: "I've learned valuable lessons from my past performance challenges. I have actively sought feedback, attended relevant training programs, and implemented strategies to improve my skills in those areas. I am confident that I have grown and will bring a stronger performance to my next role."

3. Showcase your strengths: Shift the focus from your past weaknesses to your strengths and accomplishments. Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and achievements that demonstrate your potential value to the new employer.

Example: "While I faced challenges in my previous role, I have also had significant successes. I am skilled in [mention relevant skills], and I have achieved [highlight accomplishments] that demonstrate my ability to overcome obstacles and deliver results."

4. Discuss your motivation: Express your enthusiasm for the new opportunity and your determination to excel in your next role. Demonstrate your eagerness to contribute and make a positive impact.

Example: "I am genuinely excited about the possibility of joining this company and bringing my skills and experience to the table. I have learned from my past experiences and am motivated to prove myself and make a meaningful contribution to the success of the team."

5. Offer references and recommendations: If possible, provide references or recommendations from colleagues, mentors, or supervisors who can vouch for your abilities and work ethic. Positive endorsements can help counterbalance concerns about your past performance.

Example: "I understand that my past performance may raise some questions, but I have references and recommendations from previous colleagues and supervisors who can speak to my dedication, work ethic, and potential. I believe their insights will provide a more comprehensive understanding of my abilities."

Remember, the key is to approach the interview with honesty, self-awareness, and a positive attitude. Focus on the steps you have taken to improve and your determination to succeed in your future role.

Also, If you were a contractor and your contract ended due to poor performance, it's essential to emphasize your understanding of the high expectations placed on contractors and your commitment to meeting those expectations in future roles.

Example: "As a contractor, I understand the level of expertise and immediate contribution that is expected. While my contract ended, I have reflected on the areas where I fell short and have taken steps to enhance my skills and knowledge to ensure that I can meet and exceed expectations going forward."

In both cases, it's important to be honest when discussing the reasons for your poor performance. Employers appreciate candidates who demonstrate self-awareness and a willingness to learn from their experiences. By addressing the issues openly, you show that you have taken responsibility and are actively working towards personal and professional growth.
