I got called out in public for my 'perfect' elevator pitch. It was the best feedback I never asked for.

I got called out in public for my 'perfect' elevator pitch. It was the best feedback I never asked for.

In my latest Canvas Rebel Magazine feature (yes, I'm honored to be back for round two!), I shared a story about receiving unexpected feedback that transformed my approach to leadership. It's the kind of moment that makes your stomach drop but changes everything.

Picture this: You're in a networking event, rehearsed pitch ready to go, when someone stops you mid-sentence and says "Hey, can I give you some feedback? Your pitch isn't working..."

Ugh, I felt sick.

This happened to me in my first year of business. There I was, focused on crafting the "perfect" presentation of myself, when a seasoned professional called me out in front of the group. My ego melted into a puddle on the floor.

But here's what I learned that day (and why I'm sharing it with you):

When we're trying to be perfect, we're not actually leading – we're performing.

Sound familiar? Maybe it shows up as:

  • Rehearsing every team meeting opening
  • Overthinking each email
  • Second-guessing every decision
  • Polishing your professional image until it barely resembles you

Here's the plot twist: This pursuit of perfection is actually creating more overwhelm. Every interaction becomes a performance, every decision a potential for failure, every piece of feedback a threat to your carefully constructed facade.

What changed everything for me? I put down the script.

Instead of showing up to events trying to prove my worth, I started showing up as a coach – listening, asking questions, making others feel heard. The result? As soon as I dropped the “act” and showed up as a coach, I landed a new client! Real connections. Actual impact. And ironically, more business than my "perfect" pitch ever attracted.

?? Quick Win: Next time you're preparing for a high-stakes moment, try this:

  • Ask yourself: "What would I say/do if I wasn't trying to be perfect?"
  • Focus on the other person's needs rather than your performance
  • Share a relevant challenge you've faced (vulnerability builds trust)

A mentor once told me: "Your authenticity is more compelling than your perfection will ever be." He helped me see that feedback – even the public, ego-bruising kind – is just data for growth, not a judgment of worth.

Speaking of mentors who shape us... in my first Canvas Rebel feature, I shared how each of my past managers taught me crucial leadership lessons. [Read it here] Now, in my latest feature, I talk about how these experiences shaped my approach to authentic leadership. [Read it here]

?? Ready to explore how to lead more authentically and with less overwhelm? [Let's talk]

Because sometimes the best feedback is the kind we never asked for.

Here's to your authentic leadership,

Calle

P.S. Which feels heavier: being perfect or being yourself? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Yes! It’s not about crafting the perfect pitch, it’s about who you are when you show up. For me, there is no such thing as a 'pitch', I see it as an 'invitation'. That little shift creates a different energy. When we focus on authenticity over perfection, we don’t just attract more business, we create real, lasting impact.

Love the mentor’s feedback: "Your authenticity is more compelling than your perfection will ever be.” In so many ways, this quote is designed to release the pressure and create space to simply show up in presence.

Phew, this is great advice. Honestly, I’ve found myself struggling in conversations with potential clients. My nerves keep me caught up in how I’m coming across instead of how I can best support them. I’ll take this advice to heart!

Real connections come from being present, not perfect. Dropping the script allows for more genuine interactions.
