I get messages from strangers on LinkedIn. Every. Single. Day. ????

You can't make this up. A stranger who calls themselves an “expert in B2B Hyper-Personalization Outreach” sent me a free gift. Then they asked me to “tag someone who really really needs this.” Isn't that the complete opposite of “hyper-personalization?!” ??

DMs constantly promise me things like... “$20K/month in less than 90 days...” “27-75 appointments with dream clients...” And thousands of dollars of monthly revenue without investing a single dollar.?

I'm offered mobile apps, websites and business collaboration by people who know nothing about me and who haven't even bothered to put my name into Google:

“Rich, I see you're a coach. Would you like my help to get clients?” I have to resist writing back, “Actually, I wrote the book on it. If you're messaging strangers on LinkedIn, you probably need MY help far more than I need yours!” ??

===

If you're reading this, you know what I CAN'T promise you??

I can't promise you fast money... Or fast clients... I can't promise you a predictable flow of qualified appointments... And I can't promise you high-paying clients like clockwork...

Fitness gadget ads always promise fast results. “In just 20 mins per week, you will lose weight and belly fat with our Personal XXX Trainer.” [You won't]. “Our abs machine will give you a six-pack and carve away your love handles.” [It won't].

It would be wonderful if you could lose weight or get the body you've always dreamed of by taking a pill, rubbing in a cream, or buying a new gadget but if an ad claims you can lose weight without changing your habits you know it isn't true.

It's the same for coaching. No one is going to create predictable revenue FOR you. No one can GET you high-paying clients like clockwork.

I became a professional coach 17 years ago. For 15 years, I've covered my living expenses with my coaching revenue. (Yep, I struggled in those first two years). I've built a successful business, with a small team. I have an audience of over 40,000 people but I've NEVER experienced “predictable revenue” or “high-paying clients like clockwork.”

YOU KNOW WHAT'S PREDICTABLE?

* I write every morning. I've done so for the past ten years.?

* I'm creative. 70% of what I do is different each year to the year before.?

* I collect NOs. Because yes lives in the land of no.?

* I have uncomfortable conversations. I'm brave enough to say to my clients what most people would never dare to say.?

* I track, track, trackity track. I track lead indicators (which are in my control) not income, which is a lag indicator (and out of my control). I track the 4 elements of The Prosperous Coach framework (Connect - Invite - Create - Propose).?

* I use my calendar to keep me real. It has two colors. Blue for current clients. Red for potential clients. If there's not enough blue, I have too few clients and I'm not making money. If there's not enough red, I'm going to run out of money in the days ahead.?

* And I serve my ass off. I create so much value for people that they get their money's worth BEFORE they ever become a client.?

Love. Rich?

PS. You know what's funny (and creepy)? I googled some fitness ads to research this article. When I went on social media to post it, my feed was full of ads, including: “I lost 32 pounds taking XXX...” And, of course, “BREAKING NEWS: Right Now You Can Get Our Complete High Ticket Course Launch For Just $27 (97.29% Discount!)” ????

I agree wholeheartedly Rich. Asking someone to buy your amazing “solution/stuff/course/training” in the initial invitation you send on LinkedIn is ??% spam and I often say the equivalent of asking a stranger in a bar to (I’m going to be polite here because this is LinkedIn) come home with you without having even bought them a drink. It lacks grace. It lacks charm. It’s annoying and it misses the point and opportunity that LinkedIn provides us with. A place to get to know and connect with other humans in business or professionally. The get to know part only comes when we are both genuine (not spam crazy) and helpful. Serving others, using the language I’ve heard in your book, is a large part of winning the right to have a conversation from an initial connection here on LinkedIn. I have a saying that great business development is slow business development (like slow cooking). The best results and relationships with the greatest depth (flavour) come from a quality and patient approach.

Love the humor. I used to message like this too. Little embarrassing to read, but trial and error is my way. ??Thanks for the drop of reality Rich.
