I felt gutted. Betrayed even....... Best of the blog in 2022.

I felt gutted. Betrayed even. And my confidence took a nose dive. How had I got it so wrong? Where had I taken a wrong turn? Was there something wrong with me?

I was out with a female friend and we were talking about our salaries. Then I found out that she was earning 3 X what I was earning.

3 times more!!!

After my initial shock I started to analyse.?

We weren’t that different -

  • She might be 10 years younger than me, but we both had similar education, plus I was a late bloomer, so our professional careers started around the same time,
  • We were best friends so we knew our personalities and drive were fairly similar.

But that’s where the similarities ended.

  • She worked in for profit environments all her career,
  • Her expertise was in a masculine dominated area as well (mine was female dominated - a blog for another day),
  • And she was comfortable talking about money. Her parents had not shied away from talking with her about her earning potential and how to earn more.?

Case in point, I think I got to the end of that conversation and still didn’t disclose - I was so embarrassed and almost ashamed!

Then something happened, and I got out of my own way -

  • I got fired up,
  • I got a coach,
  • And I practiced talking about money out loud.

And the rest is history. From that moment on I started to feel like I was back in charge of my own life, career and earning potential again.

The Data is Daunting

With a range of incredibly disappointing reports from WGEA on the Gender Salary Gap in Australia in 2022, I'm motivated now more than ever to empower executive women to aim higher, along with championing the salary transparency movement because it's a total dial mover. After-all, we don't know what we don't know!

Because when women earn more money, the world is a better place. Research tells us that women give back to community more, we make smarter and more consultative family spending decisions and we even make better investors as well. Yet at the same time the negative stereotype tells us we aren't great with money!

Wonderful how you handled that and so true:"When women earn more, all society benefits immensely." I had an opposite experience in my very early 20's when I was earning twice as much as others in the department I worked in and was told not to share, specially with the person who was there years longer than me. The difference for me, though, was that I had the experience and the others not, despite my age

It is interesting to compare the different journeys women take when they have started from the same page, opportunities knock on the doors of those who are prepared, are open to it and who have done the work and sought the right guidance and help.
