I Fell In Love With My Job

I’ve had an interesting experience for the last few years of my life, and it’s been strumming my heart strings.
It starts when someone asks me what I do for a living...
“What do you do for a living?” they ask.
“I organize workshops and conferences for scientists and business leaders working on difficult challenges,” I might say.
“Oh? Like what?”
“Well, the last job I did was with NASA and a group of 25 scientists to rethink how we use biosignatures in the search for life beyond Earth.”
“Wait, what?!” their face changes. This is not a normal day job they realize.
“Yeah, it’s a ton of fun! I love my job.” I reply with a smile.
“Wait, wait, wait, what did you study at school?” they’ll ask, trying to figure it out.
“Economics.”
“How does that help you do your job?”
“It doesn’t.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Well, most of my team members hold a master's degree in creativity, but I learned the skills on the job.”
“Wait, wait, wait, you can get a master’s in creativity?” they ask, further surprised.
I try to clear things up by giving a longer explanation “Well, scientists and leaders inside of enterprises face incredibly complex challenges, naturally. These days it's become important to apply creative thinking in groups to tackle some of these complex challenges. This is often what people are talking about when they use the word innovation. On the enterprise side, we focus on training innovation skills, and on the science side, we facilitate, or guide, the innovation process. Basically, we help people be more creative in their work lives.”
They look intrigued for a moment, they smile, and then eventually they ask, “How can you help people…. be more creative? How exactly do you do that?”

My name is Costa. I'm a Cofounder at Innovation Bound, an innovation training and consulting company, and a team member at Knowinnovation, a company of innovation facilitators that focus on accelerating innovation in science.
Over the years, and the many projects I've been on, I have fallen in love with my job. The kind of quiet, ever present love you hope for.
I get to play with some of the most hard-working, intelligent people, and we get to work on some of the most wicked, large problems out there.
We've worked on improving public health policies, changing the way life science is taught at universities, building innovation tournaments inside of large enterprises, figuring out how to build better software for science, making cyber security recommendations to the White House, reimagining aspects of the search for life beyond Earth, and much much more.
I have never had a dull day at work.
I love my job.
