Want to help make your workplace a better place?

Develop and encourage empathy.

Developing empathy is an essential quality for any manager or salesperson. And it won’t hurt in building long-lasting relationships, either.

James Cameron the neuroscientist and creator of the films Alien, Terminator, Titanic, and the Avitar series, says those films were successful, in part, in having the viewers relate to the characters via empathy.

Here are 5 tips for developing empathy:

  1. Practice active listening. This means REALLY paying attention to what the other person is saying, without interrupting or judging them.
  2. Be honestly curious about others. Ask questions about their lives and experiences, and really listen to their answers. It could be what’s affecting their job performance.
  3. Don’t assume. Be open-minded and try to avoid making assumptions about others based on what they said or did. Everyone is different, and we all have our own unique experiences and perspectives.
  4. Be kind. Show kindness towards others, even if you don't agree with them. We all need kindness from time to time. And giving it is free!
  5. Be willing to help others on your team. If you see someone who is struggling, offer your help if you can. Even just listening can do the trick.

So, here’s your Action Item and Mission should you decide to accept it: Next time you want to react to someone who is saying or doing something you don’t like, don’t agree with or just don’t understand, try putting yourself in their shoes.

Walt Whitman said, I do not ask the wounded person how he feels, I myself become the wounded person.
