Question from a subscriber: "I feel like everyone, staff and clients, are interrupting me all the time and I don't know how to respond without sounding rude."

Whenever somebody interrupts you, what they are really saying is this:

"I am so scared, so very nervous and afraid, that something bad is going to happen if I do not get this point across to you."

?

Take these actions TODAY:

  • When the interrupter interrupts you, stop talking.
  • Calmly look at the person in the eyes.
  • Wait until they are done talking.
  • Say this to them: "You seem anxious about this point. What is it you are afraid of?" Listen to what they say back.
  • Is it also possible you are being interrupted because you are 1) rambling 2) saying the same thing over and over. Try saying your point with 50% as many words.

?

Don't snap back at them.

Even when other people don't behave as you expected, it's still your job to model good behaviors.

By doing so, you may find that they copy what you do and this inherently solves the problem.

People deep down want to do the right thing but sometimes we get caught up in ourselves. Show leadership in difficult moments, and they'll likely follow you. You'll gain their respect in the process.

Yeah?

Yaaaaah.

BOOM - there you go, today's marketing tip for ya!

Sara Grillo, CFA RE: "I feel like everyone, staff and clients, are interrupting me all the time and I don't know how to respond without sounding rude." Many people who are interrupted frequently don't know how to set boundaries. They often send the message either directly or indirectly, "You can interrupt me any time you want." There are 101 variations of this message including, "My door is always open." The other message they are also sending is "My time is not valuable." People don't play the interruption game with just anyone. They only dance with someone who is willing to dance with them. Set boundaries. Nothing great was ever accomplished in 5 to 15 minute segments. Besides the time it takes you to deal with the interruption, you have to factor in the time it takes you to recover your train of thought. No wonder as to why you are accomplishing so little. Set boundaries. Develop self discipline. Dr. Donald Moine
