When was the last time you were actually happy? Like 5 year old happy – exited about life, not a care in the world. Not just a split-second happy when you see cute puppies on instagram or something funny on TV, but actually genuinely happy from deep inside?
About 8 years ago I was pretty unhappy.
I was in a job I didn’t like in the law… spending time with people who I didn’t feel any connection with, and I felt obliged to stick with a legal career because I’d just invested 6 years to become a lawyer.
I was in the rat race… processing my parent’s divorce… my only escape was Latin Dance which I loved… but even that I kept a secret because I was judged by some of my colleagues. I became very insecure (I explain more of that story here).
Now, I’m not saying that my life was at all the most difficult, and some of you may be thinking ‘pfft.., first world problems’.
But the point I’m making is that we all go through ‘stuff’. We go through challenges and sometimes we feel miserable.
So I’ve spent the last 3 years 'researching' the existing research on the subject of happiness – the neuroscience, the psychology, and even testing it myself.
And what I managed to do is narrow down the research to just 5 Hacks that will bring you greater happiness, more success, and greater relationship satisfaction… captured in a book!
But before I say more, here's why I wrote the book
In recent years with coaching people, almost all of them share with me that they’re unhappy. Whether it’s at work or at home, their unhappiness was destroying their confidence, their productivity, their relationships, and their ability to enjoy their life.
My own challenges and seeing that so many others were unhappy too prompted me to turn to the research.
My psychology degree only really focussed on what was clinically wrong with people, not not how to help people flourish, so I turned my focus to positive psychology and neuroscience research to understand why some people were able to live their lives experiencing happiness every day, whereas most others, who were in the same circumstances, couldn’t.
What were they doing differently?
In looking at the research, I realised that these people weren’t just ‘happy’, they were thinking and acting in ways that kept them happy.
I was intrigued and had to know more...
Discovering what happy people do differently
“Happiness is a psychological condition, created in brain, mind and heart.â€
The research overwhelmingly shows us without any doubt when we act in ways that promote positive emotion, like repeating positive self-affirming statements about ourselves, removing self-limiting beliefs and expressing gratitude, we are actually able to rewire our brain and prime us to experience greater happiness.
The research also tells us that when we’re thinking and acting in ways aligned with happiness, we're more successful, more creative, have more positive relationships, we’re more resilient and even healthier because of the positive effect on our immune system.
And it all comes down to the power of the mind.
Now, there was a lot of information out there and I was able to find the common threads, narrow it all down and bring it all together into just 5 principles – I call them Happiness Hacks – which make it so easy to make happiness a daily practice.
If you’re just like me, pictures in books make you happy – so I’ve made sure the book is full of them. And yeah, it also helps you learn and remember the ideas.
I use these hacks and the concepts in this book regularly. It’s helped me change my life. It’s helped me with my relationships and job satisfaction.
After reading the book, my husband was surprised and said, “wow, you actually really live this stuff.â€
And it’s because I really do believe in it. It really works, and it’s so accessible.
