I Don't Think I Like Women Empowerment Events
Moments after hosting the absa Banking on Women annual flagship event.

I Don't Think I Like Women Empowerment Events

Yes, I said it. I don't think I am a fan of Women Empowerment Events. Or any empowerment event for that matter.

Yeah yeah, I know "What blasphemy is this, from a woman, on #internationalwomensday ?"

Track with me...

Last August, I attended a women's summit, and let me tell you something: it was spectacular! One for the books.

The host delivered the event excellently.

She carried?the conversations with so much wisdom, and professionalism.

We had good food. Good music. A beautiful venue.

The ladies who were there were phenomenal and they looked stunning. And I'm not just talking about th speakers. The attendees too.

The gems that were dropped were brilliant.

So what's my problem? Why don't I like these events completely?

It's because they are missing something. And that something is - a plan of action.

I know you can relate to this: you attend a?fire event that had insightful and valuable information. You clap for almost everything the speakers say. You nod quite often in agreement. You feel moved (sometimes to the point of tears) and you leave feeling inspired.

But then you get home and you struggle to remember who said what. Especially if you were so taken by the moment that you didn't take notes.

You try and piece all the information together, to sort of carve a critical path for yourself, but it's just not coming together.

And then a day passes.

Then a?week passes.

A?month goes by

And before you know it, you see the details and invite to the next event -?a year later?

All that time passed, and you have nothing to show for it.

That's my gripe with these events. You are motivated by the stories and the people, but very little action is taken, in any at all.

That's why I am adamant on making my programmes an altogether different experience. Say less, do more!

My clients know that I take no prisoners. I always keep them accountable to putting everything they learn to use. Right there and then. And the things they can't take action on immediately, they can always come back to, because the step-by-step is laid out for them. The loop is closed. They're not just empowered with information, you're enabled by the strategies and action items.

Why wait until you get home, when you can take immediate action?

Why be filled with information only, when you can practically apply what you learn?

Why stop at being inspired when you can turn into the inspiration, as your life of success speaks more to others than your words ever could?

There really is NO NEED.

Time for talk is way past. Now, is action time. Actions whose results you can see immediately.

Thanks for the article Nompumelelo Mbonane definitely spot on . However here is my view. The big events are great for networking and empowering/ and exposing certain areas you may have not been aware of . After the event there is also the responsibility for curiosity, I believe women are capable of this approach. Curious to follow through with what was mentioned, curious to share with the close circles , curious to seek the clique that will help you move in the direction you want . And a lot of us want change , but we need to be in a position to put ourselves out there and form smaller groups that will drive the agenda. Just like at church, the pastor shares a general message for everyone, but it’s in the smaller intentional groups we find belonging and support to achieve more with our situations.
