‘I DON’T THINK I KNOW HOW TO BE HAPPY’

This is something I’ve heard from dozens of clients.
It’s something I’ve said myself.
It’s something I still sometimes wonder about.
On a grand scale it’s easy to see how important happiness is, how utterly pointless life is without it, but at the same time, how happy are you really?
At the beginning of every training in my monthly membership training group I ask my clients to rate their day on a scale of 1-10. Most fall somewhere around a 6, unless they’ve had an exceptionally bad day.
60%
More than half.
How acceptable do you find that?
Would you be happy with a 60% result on a test? Would you want to be operated on by a doctor who passed 60% of their studies?
It’s an ok score in some contexts and bloody terrifying in others.
Same comes down to happiness. We’re ok with a 6/10 on any given day, but what if I asked you to spend 33 years more unhappy than not?
That’s what you’re getting if you live your life at a 6/10.
On the macro scale we get it, it’s important, it’s necessary.
Then the alarm goes off and it’s all about responsibility and deadlines, presenteeism and doing what is right, paying the bills and saving for the rainy day, not realising we’re living in the rain cloud right now.
Happiness comes right down the scale, a ‘nice to have’ after financial security and doing the right thing by others.
And when I say the word happiness my clients cringe - I see them do it.
Because we don’t really know HOW to be happy. We’ve spent our lives doing our best and doing what we know, and ridiculously happy doesn’t fall in the same wheelhouse.
Or does it?
What if happiness and responsibility aren’t so dichotomous after all?
What if doing the right thing isn’t so much about self sacrifice and duty as doing what is right for ALL of us, and making ourselves ridiculously happy in the meantime?
What is career and happiness weren’t so opposed?
What it we could flourish at work AND at home AND do it in a way that didn’t leave us feeling guilty?
What if doing what made you happy was as simple as breathing and didn’t make you the selfish bitch you fear?
These are the kind of questions I’m completely obsessed with, with recalibrating our work and our lives so that they’re no longer a pitched battle to the death, so we’re not losing out wherever we go.
Maybe I’m a dreamer.
Maybe I’m crazy.
But maybe you are too!
What would make you 10% happier right here and right now? What does the ‘right’ choice look like for you? Let me know what you’re going to do different in the comments below.
Stop thinking in terms of loss and worry and doubt and start approaching life from the belief that, when you are 10% happier, so is your partner, so are your children, so are your clients/patients/students, so is you boss, so are your employees.
Because happiness isn’t all that complicated and it doesn’t come with a price.
PS Happiness and Resilience are at the core of next month’s Serenity Social training day taking place in central Birmingham.
Come and join me at a gorgeous location filled with great tea and coffee, food and cake, a cheeky gin or Prosecco at the end of the day, and a solid 5 hours of training that will help you turn up the dial on happiness AND resilience immediately.
This is a small, intimate event chock full of actionable steps, support and plenty of 1:1 guidance throughout.
There are 5 places remaining at the advance ticket price, save a third by reserving your place before the price rises next week.
There are still 5 places remaining at this event, and I think one of those places has your name on it.
PS Sunday 13th October, midday to 5pm in a central Birmingham location (less than a 5 minute walk from Birmingham New St train station). Gorgeous food and drink (we are nailing down the menu this week so get involved!).
Our focus is on happiness and resilience, two topics that I just KNOW you need more of in your life.
Spend the day with me and a small group of likeminded professionals to get clear on what is reducing your happiness and eroding your resilience and walk away with a clear plan of action.
The link is in the comments below, you’ve missed the super early bird price but advance tickets are still available, saving 30% on the regular ticket price which kicks in on 30th September.
