Jayn* told me that she didn’t need to ask for a raise because she was thinking about quitting her job soon. She liked the people and liked the job but she was feeling a little burnt out.
She hadn’t started looking for a new job, yet. I asked her how long it might take her to get a new job and she did say that realistically it could take at least a few months or maybe more. I pointed out that if she got a raise now at her current job, she could be making more money during those months that she looked. In addition, her increased salary could help her negotiate a higher starting salary at her new job. Also, making more money now would give her more of a cushion so she wouldn’t feel the need to jump to the first job she found.
Jayn admitted that was true but she said she would feel bad if she got a raise and then quit. I pointed out one of the rules in my book, Increase Your Income: 7 Rules For Women Who Want To Make More Money at Work. The rule is, “It’s Business, It’s Not Personal”.
When a company gives you additional money, it doesn’t mean that you have to stay there. You need to make a business decision based on what’s best for you.
I also mentioned that since she generally still liked her job, if they gave her a big enough salary increase she might decide it was worth it to stay longer.
Jayn thought about it. She did ask for a raise and got a good one. Now she’s starting to look around at other options but she is considering staying at her current job for awhile. Getting the raise helped her to feel more appreciated and valued at her company.
Learning for Jayn:
·???????? Asking for a raise gave her more flexibility so she didn’t need to rush to find a new job – it also made her think she might want to stay
Learning for you:
·???????? Don’t stop yourself from asking for a raise if you’re thinking about leaving – it may take months to get a new job, why not make more money now
