No, I don’t facilitate industry innovation workshops without this step anymore

What really matters to you? What REALLY matters to you? It depends, right?

This is not a straightforward question. It is not even a straightforward question for you or me individually, let alone groups of individuals.

I was talking with a CEO as she enthused about the opportunities that were opening for the industry. Where others burn energy despairing about hurdles, the conversation was lit up with possibilities and inspiration. The insights and dot connecting being shared were so powerful, I could see how she was building excitement around her.?

She had heard of my work facilitating industry innovations across multiple organisation FMCG and Food Supply Chains, Public / Private Health Service Networks, and national Professional Services networks. She was thinking perhaps I could facilitate an industry innovation workshop for them.?

No, I don’t facilitate industry innovation workshops without this step anymore.?

The Sponsor leadership team must have done the preparatory Self and Leadership Team work.?

Having facilitated strategy workshops and Business Transformation programs for well over a decade following my corporate career, the gap between looking into the eyes around a room that knew what was important and already had a core team spirit VERSUS the common setting of people enjoying being out for the day from their “busy” day jobs, expecting to be entertained, guessing what’s important to themselves and others was stark. As you can understand, the progress performance and outcome delivery also follow starkly different trajectories. Life’s too short for innovation theatre.?

We smile and agree - we don’t want innovation theatre.?

“They [Great Companies] don't “motivate” people—their people are self-motivated. There's no evidence of a connection between money and change mastery. And fear doesn't drive change—but it does perpetuate mediocrity.
~ Jim Collins

Better questions.?

What really matters to you? Does it matter enough to follow through, for the time and energy that it will take?

Do you have the emotional capacity to build the relationships necessary for this??

Will you give it the thinking space that is required?

Do you have the execution capabilities for this?

Before considering significant innovation for an organisation or with your partner network, have you taken the time with yourself to ponder this? Have you considered this in the context of the phase before you?

?It’s always fascinating to hear the conversation after these questions.?

Those who work with me will recognise this model we use for looking through different windows on our life.?

The different time perspectives surface very different priorities.?

None are “wrong”. It is just so powerful, when you are seeing them all, as you set your intentions.?

A recurring theme, working with Executives in critical roles, is the urgency we feel around our daily and weekly schedule. Got this deadline tomorrow. That report to the Board is due. I’m feeling guilty I haven’t met with team members for their Performance and Development review. $h!t my email inbox has blown up with that issue. Can’t speak then I will be on a flight. I’ve got “back-to-backs” for the rest of that day.?

In the reflection around this exercise, even those who consider themselves quite reflective and considered over the years, there is typically an epiphany - something that is not currently in alignment, an important part of life that is not being given the time and space.?

Often it is health, special life relationships, self-growth, or inspiration and social connection beyond the work mission.?

When you reflect around your life and what REALLY MATTERS, what surfaces for you?

Are you considering what really matters from all your time perspectives in your life?

Are you accountable for the next strategic phase of your organisation and wanting safe space to sort out your inner wisdom?

What has been your experience??

This is a really great conversation, Bernie Kelly Transformation Partner. I have been researching leader identity and values for over a decade, and I am so glad to see this thinking trickling into other areas of leadership and beyond that. The 'problem' with personal leadership development is that it takes time, it is not a quick and easy fix, or some kind of tool/ framework one can easily apply. It takes time, it is uncomfortable. But so valuable as you and other commentators on here suggest.

Insightful points Bernie and thanks for sharing this. From my perspective a key issue is in convincing leaders, C-suite to give up their time to participate in leadership mentoring / guidance sessions. This is something we are working on in our chapter and would be interested in collaborating with you on. ?? Steve CampbellDr Darja KragtBrad RilattSalina Scherer

With many looking at the need for industry innovation going in to 2023 do you see enough focus on the preparation of stakeholders and the leaders themselves? Does this article resonate with your experience? Does this resonate with what you see with the leading innovation work globally? What would you add? Great to talk yesterday on the contributions of great facilitators (and the IAF network) Brad Rilatt Steven McInnes Veronica Haslam For delivering transformative impact the preparation phase is a big thing in my experience. Often overlooked as the “workshop” is the showcase event. Does this article resonate with your experience? Does it resonate with impactful practice seen by IAF globally? What would you add to the conversation?
