I Didn't Receive a Call Back Following my Interview as Promised. What Happened?
This is a common question.
Let's backtrack a bit. How do most companies handle interviews? The process usually resembles
- Resume/Application,
- 1st Interview,
- 2nd Interview
- Offer
I’ve seen countless variations: the company president making an offer by phone after a single ten-minute call, while another firm brought a candidate to SEVEN different interviews. Still another - a company called me right after the candidate’s first interview, asking me to have my candidate drive back immediately for a second interview. Some processes are fast, while others can feel painfully long.
What if you haven’t heard from the company as promised? Be patient. A good rule of thumb is to limit your follow up contact to once a week. Respect the company's time and any requests they make regarding communication preferences (e-mails only, phone calls only, etc.). If e-mailing, always use the same e-mail string, as separate messages are more likely to get lost in a busy HR inbox.
The more you want (or need) a certain job, the more you must relax during the hiring process.
If a company tells you they’ll contact you about your status by a certain date, but that date comes and goes with no contact, don't stress just yet. Delays don't automatically imply a negative outcome. Don’t overthink things, focus on activities that relax you during the wait..reading, exercise etc. A polite, professional, brief contact with the company or your recruiter may be all that’s needed to convey your continued interest in the position.
