"? I Didn't Change My Path, It Changed Me"?

" I Didn't Change My Path, It Changed Me"

I didn’t change the path I chose; the path I chose changed me.

When setting out on a path you’ve never taken before, there’s no way of truly knowing where it will lead. There may be hopes and expectations, but ultimately it’s impossible to know where you’ll end up until you completely commit to the journey.

Within this feeling of uncertainty is also a sense of adventure in the unknown. Having no idea what lay ahead of us is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because of the opportunity it represents, all the while knowing that Adversity will be waiting for us somewhere along the path.

Eventually we say, “so be it” and take the first step.

Taking the first steps on the Martial Arts path as an 11 year old lead me to become a student, a seeker of knowledge, and eventually a teacher.

That lead me to study philosophy, human behavior, and to begin training to become a Chiropractor (though I wasn’t able to complete my doctorate).

At 38 I then embarked on the path of a soldier. This warrior route let me reinvent myself, to push myself to places I didn’t know existed and to levels I never knew I was even capable of.

But some paths take us into harsh environments and inclement conditions.

My path took a drastic turn, leading me to dying on an operating table and complete paralysis for a time.

The Adversity on my path drug me through the brutal valleys of anger, regret, fear, and shame. It forced me to even trek the foothills of suicide.

It’s these almost unendurable environments that force us to really take notice and pay attention to what is truly important on our journey.

Within this broken state we are offered 2 choices: adapt or perish.

Adversity gives us no other choice and when there’s no other choice, the choice is simple. I was forced to change and evolve.

In this completely broken state, the path lead me to rediscover myself and put me on another arduous road, the road to recovery.

My path changed again, this time becoming easier to tread. It lead to become a TEDX speaker, an author, a top Podcaster and Coach to some of the highest performers in the world.

So, did I have any idea that my path would lead me where I am today? To say “Hell No!” would still be a HUGE understatement. Yet, I wouldn’t have changed a step of my journey.

No, I didn’t change my path, my path changed me. It changed me into the person worthy of walking the path and the destiny of the destination.
