Do you know this great woman? Have you even recognized her yet? She is 65 yr old Mrs. Latha Kare, grandmother, uneducated but not any less dedicated. She didn't have money, and her husband was in hospital needing urgent treatment and that would cost a fortune for her. So she took part in a prized marathon… had a fight with organizers as she had no footwear…The gun was shot and oh boy, did she run! Barefooted, in her long Marathi 9 yard saree, no experience of this kind and on all types of tracks and terrains…. She didn't just complete the marathon, but…. And you will read it right… she won the prize. Can you even imagine this? I, for sure, can't.

She didn't run for fame or sport or health but for money, the money her husband would need for treatment. She won the race and won a million hearts. Salute to her. This 65-year-old lady ran a 3-km race in 9-yard sari to pay for husband s MRI (a 2013 marathon at Baramati, Pune) Also, she had a fever herself on that day. Her son had forbade her from running and the prize money was a meagre 5000/-. But she must be having some inhuman sort of dedication and love for her husband.

Here is another inspiring real life story of Dr Ravi Kannan who is a Surgical Oncologist who heads Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) which is a nonprofit hospital that treats cancer patients. He recently received Padma Shri for his philanthropic work. I remember that he left his high-paying job to help the poor. In 2006 he had offers from multiple MNC hospitals who wanted him to be head of Cancer hospital and were literally offering him huge amount of money (I think around 20 Lakhs per month!!!). But he refused and went to Silchar, Assam.

Why? To help the needy. When he saw the conditions there, he knew his calling. Even his wife resigned from her job at the U.S. Consulate, because she felt Silchar needed them more. They started their journey in 2007 to provide better healthcare for cancer patients in Silchar. I dug deeper into his life by asking my mom a few questions about him and she told me “he would always give his money to the poor”. In fact there were times he would borrow money only to give it to poor patients. People like him are the greatest asset for India.
