I CHOOSE TO BE UNSTOPPABLE

It was 4 in the evening when I realised, I was in a hospital (in Mumbai, year 1994) and lying on a bed. I saw people who looked familiar, standing around me. One of them, wearing white shirt and black trousers. I immediately recognised as one of my friends named Ravi. They were all friends with whom I shared the flat where I lived.

They started enquiring about my health, and how I was feeling. I felt very embarrassed and also a bit surprised by these questions. I thought, why are they asking me these questions? What has happened to me? Why am I in a hospital?

One of my friends, who was also wearing a white shirt said. “Niru (that’s the nickname which people who knew me well called me by), you fell down from the balcony of our flat seven days ago! We brought you here and admitted you to the hospital.”

It took me a moment or two, to understand my friend’s words at first. I could not believe what he was saying. My immediate reaction was to start laughing. Looking at my friend, I said, “Come on! How can I fall from the fourth floor? Looks like all of you are joking!” . Then I observed tears in their eyes. I sensed something serious had happened. They were quiet and did not answer my queries.

Their silence worried me. So, I asked them again “Hey guys! Why are you silent? What is the matter?“. Then, one of them could not control his emotions. He started crying, loudly. That was the time, I started realising something serious must have happened to me.

Another friend said, “We were discussing to take you to doctor as you were having high fever. Our neighbour, a lady staying in the flat below ours, came knocking on our door in a rush. She informed us that someone is lying outside the building on the ground. She said that she saw from her balcony, a person falling from an upper floor.”

Then another friend said, “We all went to the basement to see who could be that person. We were all shocked to see you lying on the ground. For some time, your legs were twitching and shaking, and then they became still.”

On hearing about my fall from the fourth floor from my friends, I was in complete shock. It was sometime before I began to fully understand the situation. I was not conscious of what was happening around me from the day I fell. I couldn’t imagine as to how something like this could have happened to me. I was in a state of utter disbelief and confusion. I was so confused that it took me a while to accept whatever had happened.

After 3 months of the fall, one day doctor came to me and said, “ Niranjan, I want to be straight with you. You are not going to walk in your life for ever. Better you start getting used to riding wheel chair from tomorrow. I couldn’t utter anything to his words, except tears flowing from my eyes. Whole world turned topsy turvy.

I should have gone to US in couple of months for long assignment. I had a post graduate degree from IIT, Mumbai. Now, I am in the hospital bed paralysed from waist below.

I had only two choices “ ???????????? ???? ???????? ???? ???? ???????? ??????????”. It took few months to accept the reality. I decided not to give up. I said to myself if my legs are not working, I will make use of my brain and hands to manage rest of my life. After 2 years of stay I took up the job in a corporate as a software engineer in Bangalore.

Now lots of things have happened in my life. Two decades of riding bumpy track hasn’t limited me from leading limitless life. I still consider life as an ocean of opportunities and worth living.

Now, I am independent and have my consulting firm. I have adopted son of 21 years and nice care giver. I am a Rebound Specialist, TEDx speaker, Author. I help people to lead happy and successful life despite any situation. My mission is to transform 100,000 people at least.
