I Can't Use First Class Toilets

I Can't Use First Class Toilets

First class gets their own bathrooms. And they warn you not to use them if you are one of the cattle in the back of the plane. They must be special. But they aren't special, and you know it.

So why can't we use them?

It's less about the toilet, and more about how the first class passengers are made to feel about having their own exclusive toilet. The airline is making them feel special for the extra money they paid to sit in first class.

How can entrepreneurs effectively restrict their economy customers from using the first class toilets?

1. your business exists to make money. All of your selling, service, and delivery behaviors should be geared toward making a profit. Every activity in your business should be profitable, or it should be stopped.

2. realize that not all customers are the same. It's futile to attempt to treat all of your customers the same, unless they are all paying the same price.

3. stop going "above and beyond." Going 'above and beyond' is your new going out of business strategy. Give the varying levels of customers exactly what they paid for, and don't give them more.

4. restrict access. For a lower price, you can take away services, or take away access to certain people as a tradeoff for letting a customer pay a lower price.

5. show the economy passengers what they are missing. Economy customers can see the first class getting glasses of wine, blankets and pillows. It's okay. Show your lower paying customers what they are missing.

What other warped comparisons can you make between air travel and your business?

I fully agree Steve Emerson! Firms are not well versed in sales - it's still hard for us!

It's funny to me that accountants are not taught sales until late in their career out of desperation when they need it. In college you learn all of the technical stuff and when you finally make partner or own your own firm, you don't know how to sell. Accounting is like any other business and selling is the key.

Fun piece, Jason. The part I liked most ... Going 'above and beyond' is your new going out of business strategy. There are Kias and Mercedes for a reason - some people want Kias. And you don't see a Kia dealer going above and beyond by letting a customer pay for a Kia and drive off the lot with a Mercedes.
