“I can’t get a job but I have an MBA!”

“I can’t get a job but I have an MBA!”

I hear this one a lot.

It seems to me that many universities fail to prepare students for their careers post-graduation.

These students have given their time, effort, and money for an education, only to find rejection, indifference, and unemployment in the job market. Not very pleasant for a young person starting out their adult life, jobless and maybe in debt.

Something is really wrong.

Students, how are you preparing during school for post-graduation?

The time to think about your job is before or during school, not after graduation, after years of unemployment or working in an unrelated field out of desperation.

A few valuable tips:

  1. Study not for the diploma but for the career. This means researching in high school what you may want to do later.
  2. Read a few entry-level job descriptions in your chosen field of study and make sure your school is preparing you with all those skills in the real-world.
  3. Make sure to complete an internship while you are still a student, preferably in your dream company where you'd want to work post-graduation.
  4. Find real-world mentors. There are great tips out there how to find them.
  5. Connect with your school alumni to network and learn about their careers, especially if they landed a job in one of your dream companies.
  6. Attend job fairs.
  7. Visit the college career advisor as early and as often as you need.
  8. Learn effective networking.
  9. Work with a career coach.
  10. Reflect deeply what you truly enjoy in life and make sure your career syncs with the life you want to have. It is the same thing, believe me.

Do not wait!

--- Excellent suggestions Krista Mollion (CreativeK). In fact, for those contemplating seeking an MBA, they really should take a very long and serious look at the merits of obtaining one. There are very few business areas that it is applicable. Thanks for sharing.
