I cancelled my subscription to the New York Times

Dear Publisher, New York Times

620 Eighth Avenue, New York, NY 10018

I canceled my subscription today after decades of subscribing. The article tonight by Mike Baker, Boy Scouts of America Files for Bankruptcy, was misleading, and prurient in nature by dwelling upon only the most disgusting aspects of the story.

The focal perspective of this article is entirely through the lens of a plaintiff’s attorney. What kind of reporting is that?

Not one word from the BSA. Not a word from any current Scouts or Scouters. Nothing about the children and youth who are being well-served by the program today. There are Eagle Scouts in the astronaut corps and in all walks of life actively involved in Scouting.

Plenty of quality sources for complete coverage of this story.

Nothing mentioned about the extensive efforts by the BSA over the past two decades to take responsibility and lead in the area of youth protection and prevention of child abuse.

Maybe Mr. Baker is a cub reporter or maybe he has some axe to grind. In any case, there are editors whose job it is to review and reject junk and send it back for proper journalistic treatment.

I am going to miss reading your otherwise good writing, Tim Egan, Gail Collins, Thomas Friedman, Frank Bruni, and even David Brooks and Ross Douthat.

Should anyone there in the senior editorial staff decide to correct this and previous biased accounts, I would be happy to put you in touch with a range of trustworthy sources.

But then, you’re reporters. That’s what you do for a living. Find “all the meaningful sources” in order to print “all the news that fit to print.” Please do that.

Sincerely,

James R. Bartlett, Jr.

Thank you for sharing your passionate letter, Mr. Bartlett. I happened to read a similar, or perhaps the same, story from the New York Times, and I was also very disappointed about the lack of fair and balanced reporting. It is disheartening that such a well-established newspaper would undertake such reporting against an organization (BSA) that is well-integrated in the fabric of the United States.

Thank you Rob. my son is a recent Eagle Scout and that has prepared him for his career in the Marine Corps. If it is horrible and an?atrocity it will be printed, if it is wholesome and good it gets buried or passed over.
