I can see Lusaka & Harare from my stoep! ????

Today marks Uganda Airlines inaugural flights to Lusaka and Harare. It is a moment that's stirring a blend of emotions for me, both on a personal and professional front. It's not often that one's career and personal history intertwine and intersect so deeply.

Years ago, during times of great upheaval, many Ugandans, including members of my own family, were forced to flee the country. Zambia and Zimbabwe became safe havens. Those countries offered not just refuge but also offered decent, honest work opportunities—which is a stark contrast to the anti-immigrant sentiments we sadly see in some parts of the world today. Even one of our former Presidents of the Republic, after being ousted from power and fleeing the country, found sanctuary in Zambia. To this day, Uganda still maintains a vibrant diaspora in both countries.

As time passed, post-war, some refugees returned to Uganda, while others settled down, built new lives, and integrated with the local communities, or were laid to rest in these lands. So, our ties with these nations are deeply rooted.

This launch is emotionally charged for me because it harks back to a time that was brutally stolen from us and moments we never got to share with loved ones. Yet, here we stand, rekindling connections with lands that, though geographically distant, never left our hearts.

The reconnection feels incredibly powerful. It’s not just a business milestone, folks. We’re not just flying planes here— we're bringing ourselves closer to regions that have played such a significant role in our shared narrative and healing. We are bridging decades of stories. We are reconnecting people across borders. We are crafting our future.

And starting today, with these new routes, a journey between Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe will now be just a couple of hours away. I can already picture it from my stoep!

This is a special day, and I must confess—it brings a lump to my throat.
