I can do maths
Who you were, who you are now, does not have to be who you are in the future. However, it is always YOU who has to make the change. Self-development comes from within and there is no other way and no short-cuts.
Everything stems from your mind, how you think. For instance, I have a habit of, whenever I see equations or approach a mathematical situation, thinking “I can’t do maths”. This is an in-built knee-jerk response which, when I consider it truthfully, is a lie. I can do maths, I passed my O Level in maths, so why is my initial response “I can’t do maths”?
The truth of the matter is, I find maths difficult once it gets beyond the basics, and I would really struggle with higher level maths, however I can ‘do maths’ and if I put my mind to it I would probably do OK at it.
Of course, I not only tell myself this but I make rueful jokes about it to others which reinforces the thought even more, and that initial response holds me back, it stops me from growing in knowledge, it prevents me from certain pathways which would help me be better at my business. So what do I have to do about it?
It is up to ME to get rid of that silly mindset which holds me back, it is up to ME to learn and accept that I have been lying to myself, and it is up to ME to work on ways to change how I think. Nobody else can do any of this for me – they can support me on my journey but they cannot do the actual work.
This is one example where my thoughts are holding me back. What statements are you telling yourself which, when you examine them, are really half-truths at best and downright lies at worst? How are YOU going to change them?
