I came for the transferrable skills; I stayed because of the culture

Starting out in any new industry comes with its fair share of doubts and challenges. Thankfully, I have a great professional network that keeps me informed and helps me stay ahead of industry trends.

In recent weeks, I’ve noticed more and more candidates emphasising the importance of working in the right environment. Now that I’ve stepped into a new role myself, I fully understand why this matters. Having a supportive, collaborative team around you can make all the difference, and it’s something that’s easy to take for granted.

My journey into property accounting and finance recruitment comes from a background in sales. While this may seem an unlikely move to some, there are actually a lot of parallels between these two positions. In sales, you’re focused on converting leads into customers, while in recruitment, the goal is to transform qualified candidates into successful hires; wrapping around relationships, empathy and shared values. It’s these transferrable skills that attracted me to recruitment in the first place. But, what made me stay is the positive and forward-thinking culture of Varnom Ross.

This experience has made me realise that candidates shouldn’t settle for anything less than what they deserve. Not all workplaces are created equal, and transitioning to a new workplace can bring about uncertainty. You want to be in a place where your colleagues are both supportive and aligned with your values. Although, while a positive work environment is key, compensation needs to reflect the value you bring to the table; after all, kind faces won’t pay the bills.

As a recruiter, I understand how challenging it can be to balance these factors, but I’m passionate about connecting the right people with the right opportunities, which is why I invest in assessing suitability beyond qualifications but also shared corporate and personal values. It’s a privilege to understand the needs of both clients and candidates, and to help them find the perfect match. It’s not just about filling roles, it’s about helping people find their dream jobs and work environments. For me, it’s about fostering long-term relationships by taking the time to truly understand both the client’s needs and the candidate’s goals.

Right now, property accounting and finance roles are showing signs of promising growth, especially within the private sector. This has been thanks to the complexities of real estate investments and a demand for specialised financial management. Regulatory compliance and accuracy in financial reporting have never been more crucial, and with the rise of automation tools, experience in these technologies is quickly becoming necessary for candidates to remain relevant.

If you’re considering a move or looking to build your team, I’d love to connect and share insights into how we can make that perfect match happen.

It’s so exciting to see Varnom Ross and Millie dive into the property accounting recruitment. There are far too few agencies matching the property accountants (I’m using this term very widely) with the right companies. There is a unique skill set required from those who want to flourish in these roles - and recognition of possible transferable skills is extremely valuable.
