I attended my first agile event Nottingham last night and had the pleasure to hear the wise words of Tobias Mayer on what the true role of a Scrum Master is. Breaking down the challenges that Scrum Masters face and the relationship they have with project owners and developers.
A quote that stood out to me was that a Scrum Master “holds up a mirror to an organisation.” Showing the organisation what they look like and seeing if change is needed. A Scrum Master should not be about fixing the problem, but should be able to allow a safe environment for teams to discuss and start to solutionise ideas among themselves.
Tobias used an interactive and visual way to show the power of three and make a strong triangle. Explaining if the Scrum Master, Project Owner, and Developers are all pulling equally allows space to be created. What these roles represent are sustainability, value, and quality. If two parts of the triangle start to pull in the same direction for sustainability and quality, value would be lost. It was interesting to see how all attendees, once broken into small groups, said that the main role the Scrum Master wants to focus on is being a coach.
Thank you to everyone who attended and fellow first-timers, look forward to seeing you all at the next one.
