Today I was asked by a leading Publisher, about the reasons and challenges I have when writing my action and adventure books. I am sharing my answers with my 25,000 linked-in network.
In order to answer your initial questions please find my answers below :-
The Theme of the Books
The stories are fictional in nature, they are true action and adventure, with the theme very much based around a number of specific characters with the main one being Mr. Rex Harrington, an ex Captain of the Royal Marine Commando’s before entering the famous Special Boat Services, he is injured in one of his last missions, and spends a lengthy period out of action. During his convalescing he is approached by Sir James Havelock (The Head of Mi6). He is recruited to become one of Sir James “Special Operations Directives “ and he is then put up against a number of the worlds richest men that seek to dominate the worlds governments and financial markets. The first book introduces Rex, and takes him around the world, teaming up with members of the CIA, SAS and SBS as they work together to stop these powerful men that want to takeover and implement their sinister plans. The stories are fast paced, full of action, with plenty of twists and turns, and a very surprising finish to the first book which I have called “The Winds of Change”. The Second book “Yemen Rising” sees the return of Rex and also some of his Old Foes that survived from his first mission, Yemen Rising see’s Mi6’s arch enemy “Akito Sumitomo return, and he looks to manage a vast new Oil and Gas field across the coast line of Yemen, his plan is to introduce a deadly virus that his team of genetic scientists have created, along with the cures, that his business empire will control. He wants to dominant and create organized chaos and manipulate entire economies by his course of actions. Rex again has to battle many elements, he travels around the world and uses a combination of military skills and special equipment that Mi6 provide to keep ahead of his opponents and in a final bloody shoot out he is able to prevent the outcome and some old scores are finally settled. In the latest book which I have started “The Jungle Hunter” takes Rex into the world of some of the world’s most dangerous Drug Barons, he has to infiltrate the infamous Williams Gang and eventually the fight will take him into the deep Jungle liar of the Dela Cruz Family. Rex will face his most dangerous mission to date, as he has to go rogue to infiltrate the gangs, he will have to use all his skills to prevent his untimely demise. This story is still in the works and will be completed before the Easter break.
The fourth Book in the Series will take Rex Harrington back to his roots, when he served in the SBS, and when he goes up against the African Warlords, this book will be called “Warlords of Africa”, it will introduce the background to Rex and start to announce some of the characters that will appear in the following books. This will be the start and will be an ideal story for readers to pick up to get a good insight into the SBS and MI6.
I intend to write a fifth and sixth Book in the Trilogy the name and theme of these stories are still formulating and will be released in due course.
The Ideal Readers of these Books
The theme and gene of these books are aimed at readers that like action and adventure books (mainly males aged from 30 to 65) –they are similar in nature and content to the late Clive Cussler, other writers similar content – Andy McNab, Tom Clancy. I seek to get the readers hooked on the stories, and wanting them to purchase the next book, getting them engaged with the stories. Rex Harrington is a modern day James Bond, but more rugged and battle trained, the gadgets and toys he has at his disposal will attract readers that like action and seek to be trilled as they continue to read, my aim is that the reader will want to read the next chapter not wanting to put the books down.
Readers will enjoy the action, and escapisms I think many of them would want to play the character of Rex Harrington, they can engage with him, and the stories will help the Readers become engaged and enjoy the action.
The Main Challenges Writing and Publishing the Books
Writing the stories is not the issue, I thoroughly enjoy writing, and being creative in terms of the stories, having be fortunate enough to have travelled to many of the places I am writing within the book makes things easier. The challenges of writing I can say is that the more detailed the story, and introduction of characters it becomes sometimes difficult to remember names and this takes time to keep recapping. Other issues I find is that when I write quickly I sometimes miss words in the sentences, so a lot of time is taken to revisit and read thru what I have typed.
I think the challenges in getting my books published is the way that I can get them into the open markets, going down the Amazon publishing route seems the easiest method but then their costs are high and I will then be tied in with them. I prefer to find an independent Publisher but again getting the numbers into the market will be hard. So these are my initial challenges.
What Motivates me to Write
I have always enjoyed writing, something I picked up from my late Father, I have during the last few years drafted numerous business “white Papers” that have been published and circulated across the industry that I have worked in for the past 30 years. As I am getting older, I have been thinking about what I want to do in my retirement. Well writing could be an excellent way to keep my mind and soul active, and like the great Ian Fleming used to do when he flew to his home Goldeneye in Jamaica and would spend his passing years drafting many a great story. I think that is the future I would envisage for myself.
When I am focused I can prepare a draft book within 4 to 6 weeks, however as I have other responsibilities I am finding that the book might actually take me about 3 months to write. I believe I could draft 4 books a years. (In a part time mode).
