I Asked ChatGPT How to Become AI Literate... Here's What Happened
I wonder what the 'goal' of AI Literacy is..
I know a lot about Digital Literacy, and I know it's more than using Powerpoint.
I know a lot about Media Literacy, and it's more about finding more than 1 source for research.
I consider what Sustainability Literacy might mean, and I figure that it's more than a recycling program to use less paper at the printers.
Now, we have.. AI Literacy.. (And the crowd goes.. mild *yawn)
According to Wikipedia, the definition of AI Literacy is:
AI literacy or artificial intelligence literacy, is the ability to understand, use, monitor, and critically reflect on AI applications. The term usually refers to teaching skills and knowledge to the general public, not to people who are adept in AI. AI literacy is necessary for school and college students.
Let's break that down (I will ask AI to explain it to a 5 year old, thanks Chatgpt!
AI literacy means knowing about smart computers and robots. It helps you understand how they work, how to use them, and think about if they are doing good things. We need to teach this to everyone, especially kids in school, so they can be smart about using these cool machines.
Ugh wait, that's a bit different, than.. ugh.. where's the critical thinking, where's the ability to understand, where is the word adept?
So, let's stick with Wikipedia for now, we love big words in Education. Let's consider what we need to be AI Literate in schools.
I am going to ask Chatgpt this big question, and I will add a guesstimate to how many hours this should take:
Chatgpt 4:
Being an AI-literate teacher involves understanding and integrating AI concepts and tools into the classroom to enhance learning experiences. Here are key areas to focus on:
Foundational Knowledge (4 hours)
- Basic Understanding of AI: Familiarize yourself with fundamental AI concepts, such as machine learning, neural networks, and natural language processing.
- History and Evolution: Learn about the history of AI, its evolution, and its current applications across different industries.
2. Educational Resources and Tools (Tools are easy, just look up Kaiba, Brisk or Magic School tick, PD, well I am sure the school will have a workshop somewhere tick) (2-4 hours)
- AI Tools for Education: Explore AI tools and platforms that can be used in the classroom, such as adaptive learning software, AI-driven assessment tools, and virtual assistants.
- Professional Development: Engage in professional development courses and workshops focused on AI in education.
3. Curriculum Integration (To start maybe 2 hours)
- AI Curriculum: Develop or adapt curriculum materials that include AI concepts and applications. This could involve integrating AI into existing subjects or creating standalone AI courses.
- Cross-disciplinary Connections: Highlight how AI intersects with various subjects, including mathematics, science, computer science, and social studies.
4. Practical Application (Let's say 2-4 hours to design a basic project for students to either use a chatbot, reflect on their conversations, or for younger students to showcase their ideas in a text-to-image)
- Hands-on Projects: Design and implement projects that allow students to experiment with AI. Examples include creating simple machine learning models, programming chatbots, or using AI for data analysis.
- Collaborative Learning: Encourage group projects and collaborative learning to explore AI concepts and applications.

5. Ethical Considerations (A lot to consider but ultimately, I can imagine this will be school or district-led, so perhaps 2-4 hours to read through it and plan something, or less)
- Ethics in AI: Educate students about the ethical implications of AI, including privacy, bias, and the impact of AI on society.
- Critical Thinking: Foster critical thinking about AI technologies and their potential consequences.
6. Assessment and Evaluation (Easy, assessment doesn't work so 0 hours)
- AI-Driven Assessment: Utilize AI tools for personalized assessments and feedback to enhance student learning.
- Student Understanding: Assess students' understanding of AI concepts through practical projects, quizzes, and discussions.
7. Community and Collaboration (Just join Linkedin - done)
- Professional Networks: Join professional networks and online communities of educators focused on AI literacy.
- Collaboration with Experts: Collaborate with AI professionals and researchers to bring real-world perspectives into the classroom.
8. Continuous Learning (Check the phone every day or few days - done)
- Stay Updated: Keep abreast of the latest developments in AI and its applications in education.
- Adaptability: Be open to experimenting with new AI tools and methodologies to continually enhance your teaching practices.
Practical Steps to Get Started
1. Self-Education: Start with online courses, webinars, and reading materials focused on AI basics. Just google it. Not that hard. Plus marketing people on LinkedIn love to talk about free courses, just search it on LinkedIn.
2. Experiment: Use AI tools like chatbots, adaptive learning platforms, or AI-based educational games in your classroom. Sign up to different recommendations, and consider the benefits.
3. Network: Connect with other AI-literate educators through conferences, social media, and professional organizations. Like, comment, message, meet, do podcasts.
4. Resources: Gather and curate resources, such as lesson plans and project ideas, that incorporate AI concepts. Wakelets are great.
By developing these skills and integrating AI into your teaching practices, you can create a dynamic and forward-thinking learning environment that prepares students for a future where AI plays a significant role.
So now you have it, you can be AI Literate in 20 hours or so according to Chatgpt.
Why is it so complex? Chatgpt says it can be done in 20 hours! hehe *This question is dry and cheeky, not serious.
Keep smiling

3 个月20 hours was enough for me learn how little I know and understand. 200 hours may bring more clarity? I try to catch up, the technology leaps forward. I will learn some developer skills this summer, focus on workflows and really dig into the ethics of AI in schools. I think AI literacy is so important but the ethics and responsibility of it all will have to come first, before we have another (but worse) cultural shift similar to what social media caused. Schools must lead this. Before AI literacy for teachers, which is important, we have to get them to experiment first and get over the fear. To find one thing to help them in their day to day life may lead to more interest and uptake.
Let's talk about Sustainability, SDG, Global Citizenship, Green Curriculum, STEM, Education, AI
3 个月You know... This is actually the trainings my school offered (asked?) (ordered?) the "tech savvy teachers" to cover this year.. I learned more talking to the AI to learn prompting and browsing LinkedIn reading the posts from you, Hamza Aoun, Fengchun Miao, Dr Philippa Hardman, and others to learn about the application and ethics in education. I wonder if they (the school managers) asked Chat GPT to get the training roadmap?

3 个月Hilarious post. It sounds like ChatGPT is just regurgitating all the recent AI Literacy curricula that have been launched in the last 12 months. I am beginning to think AI Literacy is a red herring. Teachers and students need to understand how AI is going to change our world so they can prepare for new jobs. And they need to use applications that are relevant for educational attainment, however we define it. If you pick apart the above, what does it really accomplish? “Start incorporating AI concepts into your lessons and explore cross-disciplinary connections.” What does this mean? Anyone?
