I'm failing at securing a job interview. What am I doing wrong?

Finding the right job can become a journey full of unknowns, rejections and lessons to be learnt.

Here are some tips on securing an interview:

You are unique - don't try to be part of the crowd. The best companies out there are looking for people who stand out in what they do.

Make your CV simple (preferably one page) and INCLUDE KEYWORDS, relevant to your interests/career.

DO NOT use CV models such as Europass - you are unique - why would your CV be otherwise?

An eye friendly CV with clear visual clues makes the job of the recruiter easier and he/she will appreciate your efforts.

Ask and you shall receive

The reality is - too often companies have poor software systems that can keep track of all applications - make an effort to find the contact details of an HR person of the company and send them a friendly email or give them a call. You will be surprised how often people are genuinely happy to give you an update - plus they will remember your name the next time they see your beautiful and clearly structured CV :)

Make it relevant

Applying for a position in IT with a background in burger flipping doesn't mean much and will most probably fail to secure you an interview - UNLESS you mention in the CV that your passion and hobby is to make web applications and that you have an amazing portfolio of applications available on a platform online.

Show interest

A person who is actively interested either in the company, industry or relevant subjects will always appeal to an employer. So don't be shy in expressing your interests either on social platforms that an employer can access or on a personal blog.

You are first a person

Don't forget - people work with people and especially today when interaction with others at different levels is so intense, it is important to show you are able to socialize. Company culture is key to the success of a company - so add a personal touch to your application (either in the CV or on the email we talked about earlier). Are you a good cook or an amazing dancer? say something about this at some point - show humanity!

I hope this helps :)

If your work is related to the IT or Software field - send me your CV and let's chat
