I Am Witness
October has always been a bittersweet month for me for several reasons. On one hand it is a celebration of 4 family members birthdays, Halloween with my kids and fall which is one of my favorite seasons. On the other October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which resonates with me as my mother was domestic violence survivor and my personal hero.
While she is no longer around, I know she would be proud of how this issue has come from the shadows over the past 10 years and how much better the resources are. But these resources need money and capital to continue to help serving our communities.
In this COVID environment the problem has only gotten worse and in multiple studies/articles (NEJM “Pandemic within a Pandemic, John Hopkins ‘Coronavirus and Domestic Violence†are just a few) that victims working from home has exacerbated the problem. According to the CDC there is a 1 in 4 chance that a woman will face violence from an intimate partner in her lifetime, which means we probably all have employees that need some kind of help. Also, 99% of these cases involve financial abuse as well which further restricts victims from breaking free. All the while children witness and suffer as collateral.
Being on a board of a nonprofit I can tell you that fund raising and over all capital has been much harder for the charities and services that serve our communities.
So, to honor my mother and bring awareness that today is the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I have an ask. Please give to one of these great resources that help either locally or nationally, I am listing the four I gave to today. I am witness to the beauty of survival, so please help where you can as many lives depend on it.
