I am still a professional

Dear COVID-19, 

I think we need to talk.... I feel like you are testing me right now. You are shaping how I feel about “professionalism” and the lines are a little blurred. So, I wanted to set the record straight and let you know I am still handling business. I have a few examples for you if you don’t mind. 

I am still a “professional” even when.... 

• You hear my kids screaming in the background of my staff meeting 
• I decide to wear sweatpants with a shirt and tie because they are comfortable 
• I decide to leave my camera off and just use the chat feature in Zoom 
• I accidentally use the cat filter during a call (PS I am not a cat btw) 
• I reply to emails at 1 am in the morning 
• I haven’t shaved or gotten a haircut in a few weeks 
• I must help my son (who is in virtual kindergarten) with his spelling during the workday 
• I am saddened by the injustices faced by Black people by incidences of racism and I don’t feel cheerful and my normal upbeat self 

You see I see how you are testing me. Testing my resolve. Testing my resilience. You see, I am still taking care of business. I am still showing up for my students. I know the lines between my life and work are blurred. I know other parents can feel this letter. I don’t care what you think of me because I believe I am still a professional. I am still making a difference and working in my purpose.  

I kindly ask you to lighten up and stop trying to tell me who I should be.
