I am Status Driven

While running recently, I had a realization which began feelings of discomfort and I couldn’t shake them. For context, in a recent coaching call, I shared how I’ve observed individuals who are self-promoting, selfish and self-centered. I explained how I want to stay as far away as possible from what I perceived to be very status driven behavior.

So, while on a run, listening to a book, I realized I am far more status driven than I wanted to admit. I realized I liked the idea of owning a nice house, driving a nice car, and wearing nice clothes. I’m drawn to the idea of having a title at work that engenders credibility and respect. It is appealing to think of being “on top” and to be known for my subject matter expertise.

I wrestled with this thought for a day or two. It felt like being status driven was wrong or almost dirty. It felt like I was meant to become that selfish, self-centered person I don’t particularly enjoy being around. Then came the insight.

I can be status driven and still live a meaningful and purpose driven life.

Meaning and purpose energizes me to learn and grow. I will forever be sensitive to and try to avoid behavior that could be perceived as selfish and self-centered. What I can do now is use the status drive to serve a greater meaning and purpose. I can use it to be a better husband, father, and co-worker. I can live my values and be happy while recognizing I am status driven.

In what ways has being status driven shown up in you to prevent or slow down your growth?
