I am a Recruiter

While growing up, in our schools, one of the questions which used to be asked is what do you want to become once you grow up or what kind of profession you want to be in. Obvious answers used to be Medicine, Engineering, Scientist, be in Defence, Pilot or a Cricketer. Rest of the professions didn’t come up or it was not so cool to name them.?

I am going to be a Recruiter, this was never there in my mind or many of us who are in this profession today. Recently I attended our team’s offsite, and few stories I heard from the new employees, like how they joined here, became Recruiters, how they are feeling and representing themselves to the world as Recruiters.

Recruiting as a work function has been performed from the time when the first business was established on this planet. Over the centuries, it had its own form and shape and ultimately has helped the businesses and companies to move forward. The birth of staffing companies in the 1940’s and eventually as an Industry in today’s context is an evolution. It is estimated that staffing industry generated $599 billion globally in revenue and grew by 21% in 2021. Indian Staffing Market was worth of $5.2 billion in 2020 ( as per SIA) and as per Goldman Sachs, India’s staffing industry has a potential to grow to $61.5 billion by 2030. This is the opportunity for a Recruiter if you work in a Staffing Industry and of course outside this, there is an opportunity as well for what you can do as a Recruiter in Talent Acquisition function in other industries. So, the future is for the one to see and plan for it.

As an Engineer, Teacher, or a Medical Doctor, it is easy to see the contribution you make to the mankind. Hence brings the clarity, purpose in life lot more easily and helps you to stay motivated and the vision to see what you can do to society even after you reach the age of 60. The other professions which are slowly getting noticed would need lot more help for the individuals to see this picture. Also, there are no courses which can set you up rightly to take up some of the professions.

Recruiters create opportunities for people, who are looking for the right jobs and recruiters serve them in this journey. Staffing is a sunrise industry when people are heading towards gig and flexible workforce, and recruiters help jobseekers with most of the information to get their job hunt right, and to foresee the future world of work. This is an extremely important aspect, as in this entire hiring journey, the world changes the maximum for the job seeker based on the opportunity they choose.

One incident which is quite vivid in my memory, is that few years back during the overseas trip meant for the Sales Contest Winners, one of the Senior leaders in the company wrote the occupation as “Recruiter” in the immigration form and there was an euphoria for the entire team which saw this.

Any job would need you to constantly learn and work on the uncomfortable areas. Else the regular progress is not achievable. We need to keep learning about what job seekers want and what clients/hiring managers want. How many job seekers first choice, would be you, to speak, when they think of changing of the job, in the sector you recruit? How many clients’??first choice would be you, to connect, for their talent needs, the moment they decide their new business strategy? This could be the summit to look for as a Recruiter. To reach and to be there one would have to build extensive network by meeting people in person, constantly read about your clients and their industries, understand the political, economic landscape of the world and the job market. Hence more than being a Recruiter, would it be apt to say that I practice Recruiting like medical doctors saying, they practice medicine and lawyers saying we are practicing law?
