There is a student of color in my class this semester. She is bright, present for each class, confident and, importantly, interested in human development as a career. She is the opposite of me when I started college at 15.?
It is clear that students are unaccustomed to such a student of color. I’m unsure if it’s her confidence or what but other students stare at her, with disdain, when she speaks in class.?
On day one I promised myself that I would protect this student and hear this student and look this student in the eye and never allow her to feel invisible. What is ironic is that this student arrives in class each day and says, ‘That outfit, prof, is bangin,’ or something similar; in OUR vernacular. She is, actually, protecting my mental peace. This member of the culture understands my experience. She's not confused and she can sense the energy. I know this because of the way she behaves; and it is an honor to be present for my own.
