"I am not a potato"

Hello!?Hel Reynolds? here, serving you a few tasty?creative comms snacks for your mind.

This week I've been feeling proud of?our Autumn 2022 cohort, who have completed their final module of?the Social Media Expert Programme .?

They've already got incredible results on their brands social channels, now they just have to complete their assignment before they graduate in the new year!

Congrats to the gang.?

Next programme begins in?February 1st, ?if you fancy joining us next year.

Right to the newsletter juicy stuff:

Comms Creatives content of the week

Content of the Week this week is?from Scottish Parliament, because in a low-key way, they have shown enormous wisdom and judgement in handling a situation that must have been tricky.

And I think you'll like this story.

So I saw?this tweet from Scottish Parliament , and it really made me laugh because the way the graphic has been created makes it look like they're calling MSP Stephen Kerr a potato!

Although we might laugh, it's easy to see how this might happen.?

It shows they've good formula?for creating clear graphics to promote debates:

  • Name of the politician
  • Underneath the name of the topic of debate
  • Photo of the politician to the right

It's clean, and a simple process for a visual that grabs attention in the home feed.

It's just that the title of the debate 'A Potato With More Vitamin C Than a Lemon' is an unusual one. Quite snappy.

But it somehow looks like that might be his job title, or a description of him.

It's not a mistake, or half-baked comms, it's just one of those things.

If all your graphics are laid out this way, it would be?easy to slip your attention that in this case it looks?funny.

What I like about this is the brilliant way Scottish Parliament and Stephen Kerr himself have handled this and ran with the joke.

Many politicians, leaders, bosses would demand the thing was deleted and try to forget all about it.?

They'd give the comms team a right roasting, and act like it was a crisis of reputation, not just a little glitch that happened that made people chuckle.?

They'd have made a right hash of it.

But not Scottish Parliament - they dealt with it so well.

Stephen Kerr started?his debate with a huge smile on his face, announcing: 'Contrary to the Scottish Parliament Twitter account, I am not a potato! '?

Then went on to say he found it all funny.

Legend!

So the post has stayed up, and rightly so. It's no big deal.

It's got so much engagement with hundreds of likes and comments and it shows Scottish Parliament do have a sense of humour and a warm, friendly side.

I bet more people now know about the whole potato debate now too.

Well-handled.

Keep your eyes peeled

Try to avoid misunderstandings in your content if you can, but there's no need to panic when it does.

These kind of small things that happen won't boil over if you don't overreact, and handle it with humour.
