Chapter 1: Off the Track
A Story By Venkat Subramanian ? September 2024
The teak wood of the bed creaked as I woke up in the morning, changing my sleeping posture. The first and the single ray of sun pored through the heavily curtained window and kissed my face. Before the alarm could chime 6, I was wide awake.
Lazily, I lifted the blanket and watched my toes stretching. I got out of the bed and drew the curtain of the window. The greyish blue scenario of the town park caught the glint of my eye. I stretched and yawned as more sunlight bathed the dawn horizon.
After all the routine, I decided to take a walk over the town park. I entered the rusty, broken gate. Not many people were going in and out among the birds chirping over the lush greenery. Walking over the foggy morning in the gardens gave my body some air which it needed for a long time.
The park was just a normal one maintained by the public. A simple track that went round with greenery in the middle. I deliberately broke the road that was less taken and ventured into the territory unknown. Without a pinch of fear, I walked deep.
The skies became clear as I could see the family of banyans casting their aerial prop roots over the grounds. I was walking wildly without any aim, when somewhere out of the morning's much needed silence, there came a creaking noise of aerial roots being twisted.
