Real Life with Joey: What I Learned from Mac Lake at the Legendary Leadership Forum

Mark Twain once said, "Most men die at 27; we just bury them at 72." John Stephens This statement is a sobering reminder of how many people stop truly living, settling into a life of stagnation rather than one of growth and purpose. Yesterday at the Legendary Leadership Forum, Mac Lake helped us unpack the significance of knowing our identity as leaders, reminding me of how Jesus’ identity was affirmed at His baptism: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Before stepping into His calling, Jesus knew exactly who He was. That clarity of identity gave Him the strength to withstand the desert temptations, the trials, and the mission ahead.

The Leader Audit: Where Are You on the Dashboard?

One of the key takeaways from the forum was the importance of emotional awareness as a leader. Just like a car’s dashboard gives us warnings before a breakdown, our emotions serve as indicators of our internal well-being. If we ignore them, burnout and poor leadership decisions follow. Jared Miguez great connecting with you. When Can I interview you?

Mac Lake

Here’s a quick breakdown of emotional signals that can help you check your leadership dashboard:

?? Green (Healthy & Thriving) - Keep Going & Grow

  • Joy: A deep sense of gladness regardless of circumstances.
  • Peaceful: Internally at rest despite external situations.
  • Confident: Secure in who you are and what you’re doing.

?? Yellow (Caution) - Pay Attention

  • Frustrated: Feeling stuck or blocked from progress.
  • Overwhelmed: Too much happening at once.
  • Uncertain: Lacking clarity or direction.

?? Red (Warning) - Stop & Address

  • Resentful: Feeling wronged and unable to let go.
  • Hopeless: A sense that things won’t get better.
  • Apathy: Emotionally shutting down, feeling numb.

Great leaders don’t ignore their dynamic dashboard. They assess, adjust, and take action.

The R.P.M.S. Audit: The Real-Life Check-In

Every day, I audit my RPMS (Relational, Physical, Mental, and Spiritual health) by asking myself on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest:

  • Relationally – Am I investing in meaningful connections?
  • Physically – Am I taking care of my body through exercise, rest, and nutrition?
  • Mentally – Am I guarding my thoughts, learning, and staying emotionally strong?
  • Spiritually – Am I aligning with my purpose and staying grounded in faith?

This real-life action opens me up to healthier financial health. No matter the amount, equal sacrifice produces the law of sowing and reaping. It’s not just about willpower—because willpower is finite. It’s about discipline, which comes from your identity in who you are called to be. And the only place to find that is to...

Who You Say You Are Determines Where You Will Go

Mac Lake emphasized that identity shapes our actions. If Jesus knew His identity before stepping into His mission, how much more should we? When we confidently declare who we are, we create a mental framework that helps us push through trials and temptations.

Consider these leadership affirmations:

  • "I am a financially independent and valuable businessman."
  • "I am an athlete."
  • "I am a man after God’s own heart."

When you know who you are, you can withstand the trials, life/leader temptations, and tasks ahead. Your principles will guide you, and your purpose will sustain you. Mac Lake Legendary message. Stay in touch please!

Real-Life Questions to Align with Your Purpose

  1. Where am I on my leadership dashboard today?
  2. What limiting beliefs do I need to replace with affirmations?
  3. How do I make decisions that align with my leadership legacy?
  4. What emotions am I ignoring that need attention?
  5. Am I operating from a place of identity or insecurity?

Leadership starts with self-awareness, and Mac Lake’s insights at the Legendary Leadership Forum drive this home. Just like a dashboard warns us before a breakdown, our emotions signal when we need to realign. Assessing our RPMS—Relational, Physical, Mental, and Spiritual health—ensures we lead with clarity and purpose. Thanks for bringing this up
