Question from a subscriber: "I am going to start guest blogging for a local publication. It will cost me $500 a blog. How do I get the most out of my investment?"

Here you go.

?

Take these actions TODAY:

  • Make it the best content you have ever written. If you are paying to publish your content somewhere, it had better not be some ho-hum article. If you can't make it to the caliber that it teaches the reader at least three solid points that they haven't heard before, do not do it. Scrap the article and start again.
  • Ask the editors what the headline was of the article that performed best over the last 12 months. This will give you a sense of topics the audience loves reading about.
  • See who else guest blogs for that publication. Chances are, they target the same clients as you. Maybe you can collaborate, such as by doing a joint webinar, engaging with each others' following on social media, etc..
  • Share the guest blog on your social media after it is published, to expand the reach of the article. Tag the editors so that they share it with their following.
  • Make sure your website is ready for the increased traffic. Do you have at least one call to action on the home page? Is it clear how to sign up for your newsletter? To get a meeting with you?

?

Sara Grillo, CFA Great suggestions for the person who is paying $500 per blog to appear in a local publication. A few more observations: 1.) At $500 per piece published, you are not publishing a blog, you are buying placement. 2.) If it is widely known or if it becomes widely known that this local publication is selling space, your blog or article or whatever it is may lose a lot of its credibility. I've seen research showing that articles have about 9 times the credibility of paid ads. 3.) If there are a number of other people in your field, say financial planning or insurance, writing "blogs" for the same local publication, it will be much harder to stand out from the crowd. Better to find a publication where you will be the only one in your field contributing articles. 4.) Carefully study the readership of this publication. Is that an audited figure or just their claim? Also study the demographics of the readers. What is their age, income, zip code? Is that your ideal client? If not, move to greener pastures. 5.) If you truly have expertise in your field, you should not have to pay to be published. It should either be free or you should be paid for sharing your expertise with their audience. Dr. Donald Moine
