But, I am a fast learner...

Quick Question--Your 2014 BMW breaks down, it's out of warranty so you don't want to remortgage your house and take it to the dealer. You ask your friends who they use(or pose the question on your local Facebook community page). Fast forward an hour later and you get three recommendations:

  1. A local shop in an old 4 bay garage that specializes in all imports, charges $70 less /hour than your BMW dealership.
  2. Your service station where you get your gas and everyone is very nice and charges $75 less /hour than your BMW dealership and will give you a coupon for $1.00 off /gallon on your next fill up(max 10 gallons).
  3. A mechanic that has 3 bays and an extra garage for "big long projects" who used to work at a BMW dealership and charges $50 less /hour than your dealership.

Oh and let me add a few other facts- You call Choice #1 who tells you they don't specialize in BMW's but have worked on them in the past and "knows" about them but you might have to wait an extra day. When calling Choice #2, you mention that you have seen them change flat tires on BMW's and they respond while we don't work on them a lot, their mechanics are " QUICK LEARNERS". Choice #3 obviously works on many BMW's but might cost you a little more than the other two but less than your dealership. WHO DO YOU CHOOSE TO WORK ON YOUR CAR?

While I am not a genius, (nor a mechanic) I would most likely choose option #3, the mechanic that works on BMW's and isn't a "Quick Learner" but charges a little more than the other two yet less than your dealership. The savings will be in the hundreds if not thousands.

Why am I going through this exercise? When clients ask me for qualified candidates, they often give me both required skill sets and a wish list. The former is non negotiable, yet too many times I get resume responses in which the candidates do not have the mandatory skill set, software, and/or years of experience. My team will always reply that he/she does not possess all the requirements. We get one of three responses:

  • "Thank You/Keep me in mind for other opportunities"
  • "I don't have not the exact software/database but know about it." So is mechanic #1
  • "I am a quick/fast learner". So is mechanic #2.

My clients use our services for mechanic #3. They pay our fee to find someone who has the experience they are looking for, with the all the required skills while saving them time and money in the hiring process. Don't misunderstand me, I empathize and respect anyone who applies for a job no matter what the reason. But- they have to understand, clients pay recruiter fees to find candidates who have the skills they need to hit the ground running and fast. They don't have the time to invest in training a new employee on their software and /or industry specifics. Clients can find people that don't have the requirements on their own and don't need recruiters for that, they need us for exact or close to exact backgrounds and fit.
