I am dyslexic, and I think if my learning experiences at school where tailored to my needs I would have achieved better grades.

I am dyslexic, and I think if my learning experiences at school where tailored to my needs I would have achieved better grades.

I am dyslexic, and my formative education was a living nightmare because of this. Every day in class felt like an uphill battle. Letters swam on the page, refusing to stay still. Spelling tests were a constant source of anxiety, and reading aloud in class filled me with dread. The simplest tasks, like taking notes or completing worksheets, took me twice as long as everyone else. This constant struggle made me feel stupid and behind.

What I didn't know then was that my brain just worked differently. I wasn't dumb, but the traditional way of learning wasn't designed for someone like me.

Here's the thing: dyslexia doesn't define how smart you are. It's a neurological difference in how your brain processes language.

For me, this meant:

  • Struggling to Read: Decoding text was slow and laborious. Words seemed to jumble around, making it difficult to understand what I was reading.
  • Terrible Spelling: Letters and sounds just didn't connect in my brain, and spelling anything correctly felt like a minor miracle.
  • Forget About Working Memory: Holding onto information long enough to process it was a constant challenge. This made following lessons and learning new things incredibly difficult.

These challenges had a domino effect on my education:

  • Falling Behind: Because reading was such a struggle, I often couldn't keep up with the pace of the class. This left me feeling lost and discouraged.
  • Low Self-Esteem: The constant struggle with reading and writing chipped away at my confidence. I started to believe I wasn't good at learning.
  • Acting Out: Frustration with not being able to understand the work sometimes manifested as behavioural problems in class.

The traditional classroom can feel like an obstacle course for dyslexic students. We spend hours battling with reading, writing, and keeping up. But there's a new hero emerging on the scene: Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Imagine a world where education isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. AI can transform classrooms into personalized learning havens for students with dyslexia.

Here's how:

  • Unleashing the Power of "Me": AI tutors can create individualized learning paths. Forget the frustration of being stuck in a class that moves too fast or too slow. AI tailors exercise to the way my dyslexia manifests, focusing on areas that need the most work. No more feeling lost in the crowd – it's finally learning that revolves around me!
  • Learning that Feels Like Play: AI can make drills and practice fun! Gamified learning with interactive activities turns tedious tasks into exciting challenges. Suddenly, I'm motivated and engaged, eager to see what the next level holds. This makes learning not just effective but enjoyable – a win-win for everyone!
  • A Constant Support System: AI tutors provide instant feedback, pinpointing areas where I struggle and offering targeted support. This real-time feedback loop helps me identify and correct mistakes quickly, solidifying my learning and building confidence. It's like having a patient tutor by my side, constantly guiding me on the path to success.

The good news is that my story doesn't have to be the norm for future generations of dyslexic learners. AI-powered education has the potential to transform classrooms into supportive havens, unlocking the unique strengths of every mind. Imagine a world where dyslexia is seen not as a barrier but as a different path to brilliance. With AI as our guide, this future is closer than ever. Let's embrace neurodiversity and empower every learner to thrive.

I love the idea of a coach / learning assistant that adjusts to your pace / interests / needs. That's the kind of specialist attention that's impossible with most traditional one-to-many teaching models!
